Can't start windows service

Hi, I have been trying to figure this out for over month and am reaching out for some help now. For the past month I am unable to start windows update service. (BITS is running) Everytime I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start the windows update service on local computer. Error 2- The system cannot find file specified" I have ran liveone scan, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal, malwarebytes, spybot, etc.. and it appears any type of virus or malaware has been removed or is not present. The machine runs fine other than updating. I am unable to install Avast 5 or AVG, bc I cannot install Microsoft Express C++ 10 which seems odd. I am lost here and could use some help. I have also checked the registry path of the service and it looks correct

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv and verify it is "%systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs"

I am not sure if a file is corrupted or what but it will not start the service "wuauserv" in admin tools/services

I am running Windows Vista SP2 OS 64bit.
Any help grately appreciated

Thanks for replying Richard.
I went in to check RPC and it says that it has started and is set to automatic but the window is greyed out and you cannot stop the service or change it to manual etc.. Its completely greyed out but says Started. I cannot stop it. Cannot do anything.
?
I assume this is a problem as well?
thanks

Let's see if this works

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click, choose to run as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.

Next, download Microsoft Security Essentials Download details: Microsoft Security Essentials

Update the definitions, then run a complete scan.

Ok, Jacee. Thanks for helping. I ran the bat file and the script. The computer did not reboot but the cmd window popped up ran and then exited. I ran the complete scan, no threats found. I double checked RPC, still greyed out and windows update service would not start. (i just reopened security essentials and tried to update it again and it said it could not update- Connection failed) However when I installed essentials first and it did the update I did not receive the error, only did the error occur when i reopened the essentials to update the second time.

Hello!

Please try Scenario Two here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/258701-windows-update-error-80070424-a.html

I think that one of those three things (I would hazard a guess at the second one...if that is going to be the cause) might solved your problem.

If none of those three solutions have helped, after a computer restart, try this:

Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

This will cover registered modules, reset components, the registry, and the file system. Surely one of those will give us a lead!

Microsoft Express C++ 10

Is that was it said, verbatim, or word for word? I would have thought that it would have said Microsoft Visual C++ Runtimes 2005(SP1) - 8, 2008(SP1) - 9, 2010(?SP1) - 10

Thanks, and the best of luck!

Richard

Niemiro,
thanks so much for your help. Lets start with my findings to the first link you provided. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/25...0070424-a.html

Scenario II - Method 1- I tried to reset the whole WU and clicked on the Fix It utility and tried running it.

It redirected me to the site Windows File Association and gave me this page and entry-- Windows has the following information about this file type. This page will help you find software needed to open your file. Windows File Association

File Type: Windows Installer File
File Extension: .msi
Description: An installer file format intended for use in an installer library. You may search the following Web site for related software and information:

Method II- I downloaded the file and tried to run it as admin. It bagan to extract the files then completed. It launched an error window stating "Windows Update Installer encountered unrecoverable error. (I click ok) I cant seem to move past extraction once it tried to launch.

Method III- Registry import WU.zip. I added it to the registry and rebooted. I could now start windows update service. I tried to check for updates. It search and produced the following error.
"Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Errors found Code 80070424

I did not try the second part of your suggestion yet as i wanted to give the details and results of my findings. I am able to start the process of windows update however in services after importing the registry file.

Still however, cannot search for new updates (service is running now) but receiving the error code above.

Please advise and thank you so much for your help.

Hello Corey!

Well done on doing all of that! Stick with me for a moment!

Firstly, please follow this tutorial for MSI: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/233243-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

After that, please retry this:

Please try Scenario Two here: Windows Update Error 80070424

Hopefully, the first two will now work well. Then reimport the registry fix, please.

Error code: 80070424

Code:
C:\Users\Richard>err 80070424

C:\Users\Richard>

Look at the winerror.h part. As you can see, you are missing a service. I want you to go back to this tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/258701-windows-update-error-80070424-a.html and follow the very top green "Solution", basically checking for the existence of BITS, Windows Update, and Windows Modules Installer.

If one of those doesn't exist, read down that link to the relevant section, and follow the instructions, for example, an error with Windows Modules Installer goes to the bottom of the page, and BITS goes to here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/2...ligence-transfer-service-fix.html#post1183550

After this, check that you have all three services, and all are in the correct state:

BITS :Automatic(Delayed),started

Windows Update : Automatic(Delayed),started

Windows Modules Installer:Manual

If some of them are NOT correct, please stop, and give me as much detail as possible. You were fantastic with the detail last time, and it makes such a difference!

If all three services are now good, please retry Windows Updates, and report, and then do this part of the post:

Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

Thanks so much, I know this is quite long. Take care, and the best of luck!

Richard

Hi Richard,
Thanks again. here is where I am and the findings. I restored the msi default and was able to add to the registry. It ran and opened the msi. file after doing so. I then ran the fix it in aggressive mode with no problems. Restarted.

Method II- I then tried to open and run the windows update agent and received the same error after the files were extracted. (Windows Update Installer encountered unrecoverable error.)

Method III- Added to the registry no problem

SO,
I followed your next part to verify that all services were running or if there existed.
they were listed as they are suppose to:
BITS :Automatic(Delayed),started

Windows Update : Automatic(Delayed),started

Windows Modules Installer:Manual

I am reporting that all three services are there and in the correct state, they can be stopped and started as well. (above is how they are set)

you posted- Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

this is where i am at. I did want to mention that i did the sfc /scannow and it reported the following error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service

thanks

My Computer

Richard,
I went ahead and did a reformat. I reloaded Vista Home. I am running service pack 1 and when I went to update I received the following error "Windows could not search for new updates" Error(s) found 80072EE2. Fresh copy was installed of Vista after a complete reformat. Cannot update, services BITS and WinUpdate are both started. ?
Any advice?
thanks
Corey

Hello Corey!

Please try the activation recommended above. However, the other meaning of this error is a network error. Have you installed your antivirus/firewall yet? Which one?

Thanks!
