Can't Refresh higher then 60 hertz? Help!

My monitor has flickering problems and I read the way to fix this is to make the refresh rate higher, and when I go to do so, my only option is 60 hertz. Is there a way to fix this?
I'm running Vista Home Premium x64.

What is your current screen resolution or the one you would most use?

a tft screen runs better at its native screen resolution and refresh rate,but it may also lock out certain refresh rates so if your running 1280/1024 depending on your graphics card, you maybe be locked at 60 hertz

The RAMDAC's ability to translate and transfer this information directly controls the refresh rate for the video mode it is operating in. The refresh rate is the number of times per second that the RAMDAC is able to send a signal to the monitor and the monitor is able to repaint the screen.

If your running intergrated graphics it may be limited ,so try lowering your screen resolution to something 1024/768 1280/1024 etc and then see if you can increase the refresh rate to above 60

Don't forget that at higher resolutions and color depths video memory bandwidth becomes a limiting factor. The speed of the RAMDAC doesn't matter if the video memory can't provide the necessary data fast enough.

I'm running a Nvidia 8600 GTS graphics card.
My moniter is a 19 inch Acer flat LCD P191w.
I have the resolution set to 1400 x 900.

your card is ok and native refresh rate is that what u have it set too, so everything there ok. Have you tried to lower the screen res and then you may be able to increase the refresh rate to 70,72,75 hertz

If you go look under display settings click advance, then click on list all modes to see what you can use. i would try resetting your screen settings via the screen itself reset all video settings etc and try again , failing all that , i would try lower screen res and try set refresh rate up then .

punxisandy, if u google the title of your thread , u get lots of detailed info on this and prolly would get more detailed answers than what am saying here, sry i cant be of more help and get you running.

I had same problem before many years ago on old crt screen, but was just a driver issue i think.

You could try getting newer drivers ,or revert back to an old driver ,maybe its a card issue, not fully sure. You could try using an external programme to force some settings ,like rivatuner and try using that to increase your refresh rate

Recommended resolution settings for 17>19'' as 1280/1024 which will for sure give you a refresh rate of 75hertz ,lo i did read your native setting is indeed 1400/900, cant undertstand this , must be based on vid card or something aswell.

Mines is 20'' screen and native res is 1600/1200 @ 60hertz, , i also dont get to choose any higher refresh rate for this res, so for me i have to turn down to 1280/1024 then i get 70,72 & 75hertz available then.

It always said 60 hertz unless I have it set to 1280 x 1024 which is 75 hertz but everything on the screen looks squished and wide in that resolution. Thanks I'll google that and see if I can find anything.

yeah thats true, hmm is it a wide screen or just normal layout.

wish i could give you a direct answer, sry for that, but am sure with a little time and reading ,you will hit the jackpot somewhere

when i searched your thread title and read some other forums, theres guys talking about reg tweaks and all sorts. you could try few of them maybe,but dont do anything without reading up about it, you dont want to be destroying anyting or maybe damaging your screen etc

And, unless I ma mistaken, 60Hz is default for LCDs and really should not be adjusted at all....

Hi john ,fully agree , but am not at all sure if that barrier is with his native res and if he choose a lower screen res ,would allow to adjust the refresh rate then. The refresh rate should not exceed 60hertz at anytime on any given res?

It must be a driver issue then if he gets flicker at a res that its ment to be at.

No, it could very easily be a hardware problem - graphics card / monitor going flaky....

Changing the refreshrate has no effect on LCD displays by their design, only CRT monitors need the refreshrate setting because they "Scan" an image into the screen while LCDs just change each pixel individuality rendering the refreshrate setting useless.

Its more a driver issue

I have a Dell QuadCore Duo 2.4GHz, an ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO (256MB) video card and a Dell SWP2208 LCD widescreen monitor that I cannot get past 60Hz. I have read a number of sites on Google that say you cannot get an LCD monitor past 60Hz (even if you choose a lower resolution that says 75Hz) which raises the question, why does Microsoft say, that to reduce eye strain/fatigue, you should choose a minimum refresh rate of 75Hz. It seems that the 75Hz is for CRT monitors...so why don't Microsoft, the monitor manufacturers and the video card manufacturer say so?

They have their own refresh rate, for the backlight, of around 200Hz for how often it pulses on and off per second

Hi Punxisandy,

My grahics card is the same series and I also have a "19" LCD. There's nothing wrong the refresh rate.

Go to www.nvidia.com and download the newest drivers for the geforce 8 series for vista x64 - version 175.19 has been out a couple of months now.

Vista update will not get these for you as Microsoft online driver database doesn't have them yet (at least not the last time I tried it).

If you're still having problems, go to Acer website and see if they have any updates for your monitor - in fact it's worth doing that anyway.
