can't log into mac os account from Vista

I am trying to log into a local mac os machine through my vista notebook. I used to do this all the time in WinXP without any problems.. I know the password I am using is correct, but I always get a 'login unsuccessful' message when I try to log in from my notebook. I can successfully log in from another older imac without any problems..

Is there a setting I have wrong somewhere?

Look up "LMCompatibilityLevel", "NTLM version 1" and "NTLMv2" for an explanation of why this might be happening.

Otherwise, try firing up GPEDIT.MSC and navigating to here:
> Computer Configuration
>> Windows Settings
>>> Security Settings
>>>> Local Policies
>>>>> Security Options
>>>>>> Network security: LAN Manager authentication level

By default, on VIsta that's set to send NTLMv2 which is more secure but perhaps incompatible with your Mac. If you change that to the "use NTLMv2 only if negotiated" option you might see better results.

HS2O4,

Thank you so much! That fixed the problem..

Wow, I have never even heard of GPEDIT.MSC.. I'm getting so left behind in the computer world..

Glad to hear it's working for you now.

GPEDIT.MSC is just the MMC snap-in tool for modifying Group Policy settings. The tool (GPEDIT) is unimportant - it's the policies themselves that can make a lot of difference to how your computer operates.
