Can't install Windows Search

When trying to install on a new 64-bit machine, am receiving "the update does not apply to your system" from the installer, and it fails.

Any help appreciated.

Manually downloaded Updates that have already been installed wil not reinstall.

Are you trying to configure the Original default Right click search (removed in SP1)

RIGHT CLICK SEARCH-

To restore the context menu, rename or delete the "LegacyDisable" value under the following registry keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find
HKCR\CompressedFolder\shell\find
HKCR\Drive\shell\find

Are you sure you didnt already install it through Windows Update- it will not re-install if that is the case.

No. I think we're confusing Vista's (and XP's) ordinary search facility, which is part of the OS, with the downloadable Windows Search utility (which competes with Google Desktop Search which is NOT available for 64-bit OSes). Both these apps index files and mail messages and web pages in the background.

Since Google's product, for reasons I've never understood, won't run in Vista x64, I presume Windows Search was Microsoft's answer to it, but for this new HP machine, it won't install.

Pardon me for what is perhaps a dumb question... I thought this is what normal old search in Vista was all about - it indexes your files in the background, and shows you results as you type in the search box... Whether it is as effective as Google search is another question... --ch

Ps- the Search Features Originally in the start menu and right click menus was removed after SP1- Windows Search (computer/desktop) can be restored with the above posted registry hacks.

No, it's an application of its own. The error msg says it's an upgrade, but I believe that's a misnomer.

This doesn't show up in my update history list, so I assume it's already in...?

I discovered the installed Update for Windows Search and removed it successfully, rebooted and reinstalled the x64 version without any indication of errors. Still, it's just not there. I checked my XP machine where it's been installed for months, it operates fine -- shows the search window in the Taskbar and brings up a menu when clicked.

Thats because it is integrated into Vista, and you wont see the search window unless you add it back using the registry hacks to restore it
The Start "search" button was removed in SP1 (it can be restored also), and with the hacks it is a right click "search" to open the menu
The right click search shows at the following location (when restored):

Drive

If It is working, and you have the right click search, then no. Are you going to add the search to taskbar/desktop?

I think we're still talking about two different search tools. Search, from the Start icon, has always been there as it is imbedded in Vista -- but this is not the downloadable app/Google Desktop alternative Windows Search 4.0 which installs its own search window in the taskbar and should be off indexing the disks. My presumption is that MS came up with WS4.0 to compete with Google and developed it as a separate app -- especially important since Google Desktop won't work as a 64-bit app.

After I hacked the Registry, I did reboot but still don't see any indication that WS4.0 is anywhere on the system.

CH: Maybe I'm wrong. I just looked over my XP version again and the Taskbar icon calls up the same menu as the Start menu. What I'm not understanding is why the system doesn't appear to be indexing, but then I'm used to hearing a disk grinding away and this new system is much quieter than the old one. Let me look at it some more as it seems to be testing fairly well. I thank you very much for your help.
