Can't Install any new ATI drivers... Gateway notebook

I've got a brand new Gateway M-6862 notebook that is giving me BSOD related to some minidump thing only when I am running Azureus 2.5, and my google searching told me a graphics driver update would help. The problem is, anytime I run any ATI installed, it immediately exits and says "Catalyst Install Manager stopped working". I heard about some project called Mobility Modder Mobility Modder - DriverHeaven.net and tried what they recommended, but no go. I have unistalled all VC 2008+ packages, uninstalled and reinstalled .net framework 3.5 all to no go. Even when I click the "Uninstall" button that comes up in the installer, it immediately exits in the same fashion. I tried uninstalling the drivers manually, but it just immediately reinstalled the old ones when it booted up, and of course the 8.8 (and 8.7) installer crashed even after I uninstalled them again and didn't reboot.

HI Dihnekis,
Welcome to the forums,

Can you please explain how you attempted to install the new driver manually? I assume you mean you went to Device Manager > Right click on the display adapter > choose update driver then browse for the new driver?

Yes, that is what I tried. It said that I already had the best driver, and did nothing.

The real problem seems to be that any time I open a torrent program, be it Utorrent, Azureus or the original Bittorrent client, Vista crashes in under 3 minutes. I have edited my TCpip.sys file to allow a ton more connnections, but that did nothing. What is the deal?

Also, I have a Gateway notebook with 4gb of ram, a core duo and an hd 2600. Can I wipe Vista off it and go to XP without running into driver problems?

HI Dihnekis,
XP (32 bit) will not see/use all 4 gig of memory. You can check Gateway website for XP drivers for your computer first and download them all. Have you attempted a system restore from a earlier time when the computer worked fine or has this issue been there the entire time? If you do a system restore make sure you back your data up first.

I did a search and found out about that issue, so I guess I will stick with Vista. Bittorrent is working ok now, I did a registry search for Azureus and deleted all values, and I am only running 1 or 2 torrents at a time. It sucks, but it is better than nothing.

There was no earlier point that worked sadly, I got this computer 2 days ago and it has crashed with torrents from the start. Thanks for your help.
