cant figure out how to record with my midi

I'm using a ux16 yamaha midi interface with my YDP on Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have installed the driver and have been able to send sounds from my computer to my keyboard. However, I would like to record my keyboard stuff onto my computer. My computer is recognizing the MIDI, but not recognizing it as a recording device. What do I do?

I have never used a MIDI, so I'm a little unsure of how all this works.
