Can’t Delete a User with no Aliases

I have been having this problem for a while now. Under any file I download or any shortcut I make under security is a User with no name. This is what it says: Account Unknown (S-1-5-21-3555475015-4039561939-2811441107-1002). This has been concerning me because I’ve noticed that any file with this in security can’t be removed by anything but the Recycle Bin, which I find interesting, I usually use a file shredder for any file I want to delete, but I can’t. So my question is how do I delete this user name… with no name?

Hi KingJ50,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

See if when you are in Properties, Security tab, Advanced button, Permissions tab, Edit button if you can select the unknown user account and click Remove. Then OK your way out. Make sure that your current user account is listed first. If not Add it.

Hey Shawn,
I did what you said but when I got to Advanced Section and clicked edit I wasn’t able to remove the Account from the list (its grayed out). So… anything else I could try?

Ok KingJ50,

To make sure that this S-1-5-21-3555475015-4039561939-2811441107-1002 user profile is gone for good, go to this tutorial below and do Option Two to delete the S-1-5-21-3555475015-4039561939-2811441107-1002 key if it is still listed. Be sure to back up this key to be safe in the steps.

When it will not let you Remove it from the steps below in Security, take ownership of it first then try the steps again.

See if when you are in Properties, Security tab, Advanced button, Permissions tab, Edit button if you can select the unknown user account and click Remove. Then OK your way out. Make sure that your current user account is listed first. If not Add it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey Shawn,
The Unknown accounts weren't in regedit

Edit: I said accounts because now there are two

Edit 2: I took ownership of one of the files, but the remove button is still grayed out

Hi KingJ50,

Maybe it comes from an user you deleted or even from an earlier installation....
If you can find the folder originating the problem, you could just delete it in the security tab of this folder(s).
To take ownership with all permissions, click advanced on the security
properties page, click the owner tab, edit, select new owner or search for it, (do
not check the box next to replace owner on subcontainers and objects if it
is there), and then keep clicking ok until the properties window is
gone.
Reopen the security properties screen, add the new owner if it doesn't appear and you should be able to take full control of the folder and all files in it.

Thanks, but I have never had another OS on the two hard drives before only vista.

I must admit that I'm stomped. The only other thing I know of to do is a reinstall. I hope someone else may know a better solution for you and post it.

Ok, and another user? even you were the only one user, did you try to go up to the original folder having this user and did you try to delete it from the security tab?
