Cannot scan pictures

I use my computer to scan pictures or look at stuff on ebay. I would say I am on the computer 2 hours a month. I have a hp 2200 all in one printer that worked fine with my old cheap $400.00 computer. My husband thought he would be nice and buy me an upgrade I now have an $1100.00 computer that won't scan pictures and after two months and more time than I have ever spent on a computer I am finding out this is not uncommon. Can someone PLEASE help me? I miss scanning and sending photo's to my family.

Is there a driver available from HP for your OS? If so, get it and use it (and don't get the driver only if you are using USB or network to connect to the printer).

Can you please tell me more about the problem
Exact name of the printer?
Is it installed? or do you need drivers
Can you scan from the printer and not from the computer?

I went through using paints as said and reply from computer was unable to retrieve image from device verify connected and try again. I know it is connected as it will read my digital camera card and send that to computer and it will print stuff from computer.

What do you see when you click Start and type in Scanners and Cameras, and then hit enter to open this tool?
If your scanner is not listed, click the Add Device button.

Strange. The HP PSC 2200 is natively supported by Vista, albeit with a basic driver. Try disconnecting it (physically remove the USB cable), rebooting your PC and then, when your PC has fully rebooted, reconnect it. With any luck, it should detect it and proceed to install the correct driver. Let us know if this helps. If you have a spare USB cable with the correct plugs, try that to see if it makes any difference.
