Cannot Install HP DVD/CD Burner Driver

I am using a HP Pavilion a6000d desktop with Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 Bit.
I installed a new HP CD/DVD burner.....when attempting to download the device drivers, it says the driver install has failed. There is an error code 10 (This device cannot start. (Code 10). When I try to update the driver, it says it already has the most appropriate driver installed for that device. I will try HP's site and see if I can get this darn driver installed. In the interim, if an expert can help me download the driver so I can burn I would be very grateful. New burner I installed is a HP 24x DVD/DC writer model 1260i...............I'm aggravated!

Dont get aggravated we will try to help
Go to search type device manager
and uninstall the old driver
Although for a printer this is the basic way that it is done. But save to desktop for now

Then save the most up to date from the HP site to your desktop and we go from there.

Sorry, it's a a6220n about two to three years old.

I removed the driver (of course, the whole device was removed from the device manager tree in my control panel.) and..............I cannot find the newest driver for the burner on HP's site. Sorry!

I don't know of any optical drive that comes with drivers, they all use the default driver that Windows installs. Probably why you can't find a driver for it. Software on the other hand is another story, usually something like Nero for burning or Lightscribe software if the drive supports.

Try either the auto-fix or manual method here,

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista

and see if the drive will work.

Burner is not listed. I tried to update the driver and it said it was already installed and up to date. The specific name of the burner is a HP 24 X multiformat dvd/cd writer model 1260i. I am replacing the old burner in the HP Pavilion. I can't seem to find the driver for this burner.

Double check all connections on the motherboard and drive for a start (power and SATA cable, maybe even try another SATA cable). Next follow this,

and if it shows, remove the old drive. As far as a driver for it, there isn't one beyond what Windows installs for it by default, you will not find a driver online anywhere.

I have just spoken to HP customer care (UK) & it appears that there are no drivers needed (so I was told), but it's something done directly with the service engineer on the phone.
