cannot download with vista...

ok so i use vista home premium, have firefox installed. I cannot download anything using firefox or IE. whenever i do try to download the download window comes up and downloads all the way. I do not use desktop as the place where files are placed so it doesnt get cluttered, but it is in a folder on the desktop.

When it is done downloading there is nothing in the folder. It will be there while downloading ( and i can do anything with it), but when the download finishes the file dissapears and is unable to be found anywhere. It is not hidden or anything. I've done full advanced computer searches and the file cannot be found. I have AVG, but it is disabled.

I am in a few college classes and another problem that i am having is that when i try to take my homework off the site (usually in a .zip or .doc format), i have an error that comes up saying Cannot open C:\Users\Ryan's\Appdata\Local\Temp\StudentDownload.zip (or .doc) this is a HUGE!!! problem as i cannot afford to run back and forth to the college everyday trying to get my homework done.

PLEASE!!!! help me!!! have tried to solve this problem for over three months now and REALLY!!!! dont wanna have to buy vista just so i can re-format

A couple issues I see:

Disabling your antivirus is a very, very bad idea...

Try downloading to the "downloads" folder; (i.e., "save to") C:\Users\Ryan's\Downloads

Why are you downloading files to a temporary Application data/local folder anyways? This is a "junction", and not a real folder:

If you have enabled Show Hidden Files, you may have already noticed that there are still folders with the old names on your computer. These folders will have a transparent icon and a shortcut symbol, as shown below:
Junctions.PNG

It is important to understand that these are not "real" folders. They are called junctions, and their purpose is to point programs that try to access them to the new location. They are similar in functionality to shortcuts, but look like normal folders to programs.
Because they are not real, attempting to access them will result in an "Access Denied" error.

I have had the download's set to go in the download folder before... nothing changes when downloading

I do not know how to change it so its not downloading into a temp folder... i did not set it that way and i am unsure why it is doing this. If you have a way so that the direction will change because i am unsure of how to do this
thanks

2 months ago I ran into same problem with vanishing files on a computer infected to no end :) I kept a few bookmarks, Can't find downloaded files usng vista o/s and http://forums.wincustomize.com/163645 I believe uninstalling AVG is one of the things suggested. And do the IE reset/toggle of internet settings. Dont remember details other than we also fiddled with file system security, access/permissions rights and what not. Thought that could have been tampered with. Even tried a new user account. Nothing helped. Long story since troubleshooting was done blindfolded in a chatroom - but computer had old fat Norton suite which turned out to completely done over by virus. That had to be real problem because after getting rid of that, thanks to their removal tool, and letting a bunch of scanners remove infections all worked again. Every download from internet vanished even if put on external hd - like some proxy whatever stuff filtered all incomings. Dont know but search google for "vanishing files desktop vista download" or something. Same problem pops up here and there, does not have to be due to infections.

The homework problem you should probably talk with who ever administrate the network - or you risk geting slapped :) If that person is very much into security you probably have few options as to moving/copying files around, must follow procedure.

Hi killer,

I assume you disabled AVG as you heard that can sometimes cause this issue.

Suggest you try Avast as it's very Vista friendly - do a full scan with it and d/l and scan with the free Malwarebytes.org , to be sure.

If you are comfortable editing the registry ( always make a back up first ),

Open regedit

Scroll down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

In the right pane, right click "Download Directory"

Select "Modify", enter the path to your new download directory. Make sure to type this exactly right. Click "OK".

If you prefer not to go into the registry yourself, here is a .reg file with the default setting if you would like to try it.

View attachment IEDOWNLOADDEFAULT.zip

If so, d/l the file ( may need to do it another machine and copy it to yours). Rt click and extract the .zip file. Double click the .reg file and OK the warning.

Hope it helps
