Cannot delete a file

hi guys, im having a similar problem but nothings working so far
a) cant delete it - says "could not find this item. this is no longer located in _____. Verify the items location and try again.
b) downloaded the take ownership reg and i right click, take ownership, try to delete, gives me same error saying cant find file
c) i right click, properties, go to security, and it says "the requested security information is either unavailable or cant be displayed"

You might see if using the free program Unlocker on the file may be able to help you delete it.

What is the file? Have you rebooted to see if it goes away after that? Might try a program like CCleaner to delete your temp files if that's what it is.

I'm having the same problem. When I try to delete the icon on my desktop it says...

"Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:\Users\John\Desktop\-- Verify the item's location and try again" then it gives me the option to try again or cancel.

I've tried deleting it in Safe Mode, I get the same thing. I've also tried running CCleaner and still no luck.


Can anyone help me out?

yup ive tried safe mode too

my file is in a folder on my desktop, its an ebook, it says its simply "File" type, and is 0 bytes

You might see if using a elevated command prompt with the DEL command may be able to remove it. If you are not sure how to do this, then post back the exact full path and name of the file. I'll post instructions on how.

Try MoveOnBoot. I used it once when I made a folder with a blank name (alt+0186 or something) and it wouldn't delete after. Just specify the path of the file in the program and then set it to be deleted on the next reboot.

Here you go:

• Open a elevated command prompt.
• Type cd\ and press Enter.
• Type cd\Users\XXX\Desktop\My Stuff and press Enter.
• Type del /f E Book Name and press Enter. (Be sure to include the file extension)
• Close command prompt

im trying this, and there are lots of spaces and - in the name of the file, when i type del /f name, it says "could not find c:\......\Ebook and doesnt show the rest of it

After you have typed cd\Users\XXX\Desktop\My Stuff and press Enter, type dir and press Enter. This will give you a directory of the files you have here. Look to see what condensed (8.1 dos) name is used for that file instead. Next, use that file condensed name with it's file extension with the del /f command instead.

You can't. It's part of Vista. Did you see the file name listed? It will probably look something like text~1.

there is no file extension at the end, under properties it says

Just installed it... when I try to load the file it gives me basically the same thing " File not found, Check the file name and try agian".

Have you tried using a Linux live cd? Ubuntu can be used to copy files/folders , so may be able to delete these ones as well.

I haven't done it myself , and it's a long shot - but you may be ready to try just about anything.

Since this is a torrent file, have you looked in the torrent program to make sure that it has been stopped and removed from it to not be used for seeding?
