Cannot browse, have internet connection

Hi all,

Here's my problem. I cannot browse the net, but am definitely online. I have an HP desktop with Vista OS. I have wireless and I know everything is fine with the connection, because I am typing this post off an XP laptop which is using the same modem.

Yesterday the problem began when I uninstalled a DivX player that I dont use. I have read up on this and other sites and can't find a solution. Everytime I try to browse from the desktop I get the HTTP 403 error message. I have tried rebooting, "winsockfix", several command prompts, pinging, the IP address is fine, I am all out of ideas.

Can somebody please point me in the right direction, I have spoken to HP, AT&T and the store I purchased the computer and no dice, anywhere. All suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forums .

I believe this problem can be solved by:

Navigating to Internet Options by searching for it in the start menu.

Clicking on the connections tab.

Click the LAN Settings button and untick use proxy server.

Hit OK.

Please post back with any success.

Oli

P.S. Have you tried any other installed browsers?

Oli,

Thanks, but it won't be so easy:)

I have tried every internet options related tactic. I have tried most logical suggestions. Pings fine, connection solid, wireless connection works with XP laptop (I am using it right now), just the desktop won't respond (Vista).

I have Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox as far as browsers.

Btw, just to be clear. LAN settings is unticked as you suggested.

I'll be glad to keep posting if you are willing to have patience:)

Been working on this for last 7 hours, non stop. All tech support people I have called offer no ideas:/

thx,

No problem, although I can't be online all night.

Have you tried accessing the internet from another user account? Sometimes this will work sometimes it won't but it will help to find the root of the problem.

No worries,

I am not sure I get your meaning. How would I set up another user account? From the same computer you mean?

What I am able to do is access the modem from my laptop and connect without a problem, but that one is an XP.

Sorry, noob here:)

Have you looked at Error 403 "Access Denied/Forbidden" ?

If you haven't it's worth a look.

It may be worth turning all your Antivirus of temporarily and seeing if that helps.

brummyfan,

looks good, downloaded, installed, but after starting fix (found 1400+ problems), it is asking for a valid license key...I never got one, thought this was supposed to be freeware? it says, to check my confirmation email, but I never even submitted an email?

confused...on bright side, looks like it may work once i register

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
  3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
  4. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
