Cannot access links from email

Firstly,I do not have a problem with my email (windows mail) as such, as I am able to send and receive emails fine. I also do not have a problem with IE as Google opens fine and I can access all websites. My problem lies in my emails. Every time I try to access a link in any email, a window comes up with a red cross in the corner and it says "Application not found". I have never had this problem until today. The only thing I can think of that I've done differently on my computer recently, is the otherday,I was in movie sites and had to download this DivX(R) player (which didn't work anyway) and with that came Google Chrome. Yesterday I uninstalled the Google Chrome and am wondering if this caused the problem. In simple language please as I'm not an expert and was also wondering if this has something to do with my IE settings. I apologize if I don't get back today as I have to go to work soon.

Welcome

Make sure that Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail is set as the default e mail client, when not on web mail.

Make sure that your browser of choice is set as default to access the links.

Type default in search to find the default settings.

Run an anti-virus and anti-malware scan to make sure you didn't download any bogus codecs....

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware |MG| Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 Download

* Right click, run as Administator mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
