Can I use XP restore CD's on a Vista laptop?

I've been wanting to ask this question for 10mos.

I have a gateway laptop m-6881 w/ vista 32bit HP sp2. (8/2008)
I also have a gateway tower S500 XP Pro 32bit SP3 ( 3/2003)


The laptop has 3 restore DVD's with the OS on it (sp1) - also other programs and drivers.
The tower has 4 restore CD's with the OS on it - including 2driver cd's, 2programs cd's.

Can I use the restore CD from the XP machine on my vista machine as a dual boot as long as I wipe the HDD of the XP machine and toss it? ( since both are gateway )


I no longer want to use my XP,win2000 or win98 rigs anymore.
I'm going to wipe the HDD and give the hardware away.


This may not make sense but I can't get my fingers to type what I'm trying to say

Sorry, but a OEM XP like that will usually only work on the same computer that it came preinstalled on.

I am just throwing this out there because we use it here at work sometimes. Using Acronis and Bart PE to make an image of a computer...my boss explained it to me where there is a certain way you can do it so the image can go on ANY pc as long as the drivers for the hardware are on it already.

I don't know how it would work with dual booting, and I haven't done it much so I wouldn't be able to be support through the process. I just wanted to give you another option to research/consider.

I know that Compaq used to serial number their recovery CDs and hard drives/motherboard so that if you used their CDs on a non-Compaq computer it gave you an error and said basically 'this isn't a Compaq computer' and the install fails. Happened to me when I rebuilt a computer, installed a store bought hard drive, and tried to use a reovery CD on it. The case, power supply, ram, and motherboard was original Compaq.

i have used old oem discs before from old systems on my new ones.

but not the restore cds
