Call of Duty 4 will not work on my comp!

Dose anyone know what I can do to make Call of Duty 4 run on my system? I am running Vista x64 on a Skulltrail system w/ 2 Quad Core Xeon's at 2.5 Ghz, 2 en8800 gt's in sli, 8gb of ram...

I ran the game fine on my XP install, but since I moved to vista I haven't gotten it to work. I have tried: running as an administrator, changing the folder permissions for the install directory, running in safe mode, running in compadibility mode, and that's all I can remember at the moment... needless to say I'm quite furstrated at this point.

The error I get is "iw3mp.exe has stoped working"... Same thing for single-player exept "sp". I am really only interested in multiplayer though...

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Please provide helpfull comments as however, "Go back to running XP" ,for example, isn't...

Yes, and I have tried running the game incrementally throughout the patching process (it gives me the same error for every patch).

Go into the control panel then in sounds and click on the recording tab and right click in a blank are and make sure show disable devices and then enable recording mix and ok everything and see if it will run.

I had that same exact problem but for the life of me I can't remember what I did to fix it.

I tired the sound thing... didn't work ... it was set that way already... How is that supposed to help?

It was one of the work around to get the multiplayer to work.

Have you tried doing a clean install of COD4 and deleting all files and folders that pertain to COD4 on your computer and also deleting the registry keys.

Everything minus the Registry Keys... *sigh... guess I'll start downloading the patches again...

Had a similar problem, this error is caused by a sound device driver.

Got something like this to get it working from another site ... it was a while ago now so can't remeber the exact details. Also noticed once I got past patch 1.4 pings show as above 250fps, some times a bit lower if saved to favourites, this appears to be an issue for a lot of people, so far I haven't found a solution for it.

In the recording tab window right click and select "show disabled devices", by default only enabled devices appear in the list. This should then show 'Stereo Mix' in the list.

Just so your aware - Stereo Mix on my system is disabled and COD4 works, I think I remember playing around with the default audio device for a bit.

Others say enabling 'Stereo Mix' didn't work for them but plugging in headphones or a mic to the Mic socket fixed the problem, something to do with the audio codec in COD4 not properly recognising ASUS motherboards and Realtek sound device. Vista detects if a Mic is plugged in or not, this shows up in the recording tab. It appears COD4 requires drivers for a Mic device are installed whether you are using a Mic or not.

Yet more people say changing the default audio device to headphones seemed to work for them. Some others say the problem went away once they applied the 1.4 patch of COD4.

All agree it's not a straight forward solution as depends on your system hardware configuration, how Vista works and a specific issue with COD4. Good luck, from memory it took me about 45 minutes to find a solution on the Net that worked for me. I tried to get the game working from a fresh install before applying any patches to get it to 1.7, maybe I should have applied all the patches first ?
