Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer crashes on initilaization.

I have recently updated all of my drivers and software for vista and installed Call of Duty 4, I can run it single player but when I attempt to run the multiplayer version of the game, I will start it in safe mode and the resolution will change, then the resolution will change back and it will give me the dialog box with "iw3mp has stopped working."
It is legit, so is my vista, What is wrong? Why is it crashing and how can I fix this?

Game all patched and up to date? Loads of threads on yuor issue on the interweb , all with differant solutions , just type the title of your thread in google and try everything , main culprits seem to be ATI tool and sondcard issues

Well, I had this problem too. Searched, searced and searched again. Seemd that it had no solution.

The solution fund after all, tried and worked was that I plugged the microphone in. It sounded to me absurd too, but it worked. I have a realtek on-board sound and I have an option to "disable front panel jack detection" under "connector settings" (a little folder icon in the upper right corner). That way it sais to driver and game that microphone is pluged (even if not so) and the game works.
