one day my thumbnails just stopped loading and i have no idea how it happened.

when i open a picture folder it looks like this:

BuggedThumbnails1.jpg

most of the time they look like this:

BuggedThumbnails2.jpg

only way i can get them to display is to press the "Views" button 4 times then stop on the large icon view which displays properly:

BuggedThumbnails3.jpg

could this be the thumbnail cache? or maybe the app/program that generates them? possibly explorer? plz help me out here.

i tried disabling thumbnail display and re enabling it and it still displays the same.

as for resetting the folders view settings that also did nothing.

could this be an explorer bug? because it doesn't seem to check the icon size when i open a new folder (see picture 1), then after it has been open the first time, anytime i open it again it doesn't display any thumbnails (picture 2).

why would it not try and generate a thumbnail when i open the folder but then work when i change the View setting?

oh and i also tested this on a new user account and it is exactly the same.

ok so i didn't see the links on that tutorial, but now that i went through them i found that if i change the display setting to 16-bit then they display perfectly (like the pic below) but i still want to fix it on 32-bit because i still wanna use graphical vista. so i hope this info helps narrow the problem

now at least i can see thumbnails on folders now :p

Looking at your last post I noticed the folders you were having troble with all seem to FRAPS? This is a video format isn't it? The problem may not be in Vista at all but in your codecs. Are you sure the installed codecs are for X64? Do ordinary JPG etc display correctly?

i assume you are thinking my video codec can't generate a preview for some of my videos.

it is not just the fraps folder, it happens to everything, no matter if its a video, folder or jpg. anything that should generate a thumbnail when viewed at medium size, large icon size or extra large just shows white like in my second image in the first post.

i just uninstalled fraps and k-lite video codec but that didn't change anything. btw if this helps any, i did use ComboFix on my pc which did mess with a few progs of mine, im not sure if it has anything to do with it tho. hopefully not cause i used it on a few othor peoples comp with vista who had viruses, but nothing happened th theirs which is the reason why i dont think it is relevant.

What graphics (video card) hardware do you have? Vista Ultimate is resource hungry on the video side of things.

im using an ati all-in-wonder radeon 9600 256mb AGP, i dont think it has anything to do with my video card because it was working for awhile before this happened.

Why did you run combo-fix? ComboFix specifically targets SurfSideKick, QooLogic, Look2Me or any combination of that group.

It also picks out and clears some Vundo infections. Did you suspect an infection, or were you infected?

i use it on my clients comps if they are infected(we have a small business), ever since i discovered it a few months ago. i used it on my comp just to see if it would find anything.

i already posted on a different forum that ComboFix helped me fix someones comp and i just got yelled at about how i shouldn't use it because its so powerful. so i dont need more ppl telling me how i need to be careful with it, I'm very good with comp repair so i know my way around comps and how to fix/diagnose most problems, if combo fix breaks something and i cant fix it then ill ask others how to fix it.

Fine. I'm glad you are able to diagnose/fix most problems so I guess you may be able to diagnose that you might possibly, even most likely, have deleted a system file that is now screwing with your computer. Have you run System restore to prior the time your computer got screwed? Did it work? Have you backed up all your data? You may need to reinstall Vista. If you weren't an expert I might point out that these programs are very powerful and you shouldn't run these things UNLESS you have a problem or you knew what you were doing. But then, you are an expert and you do know what you are doing, don't you? :zip:

ok so there might possibly be a missing system file? and no i did not use a system restore which i probably should have after i first noticed the problem...

now i might eventually reinstall vista which i have done a couple times in the past, if i get a couple more problems, because this isn't that big of a annoyance to reinstall my OS over.

so if anyone can figure out what system files i can check to see if they are missing or a registry that may have been deleted it would be appreciated. thx guys

i already know that combofix is a "powerful program", it warns me every time I open it and i understand the risks. i appreciate your concerns.

A system restore is your best bet. It's impossible to figure out what files you may have deleted. Also I might point out that this is an obvious symptom. There may be other less obvious things happening due to the registry changes that will come back to bite you later.:geek:

i might try a system restore later if i have no other option, i say that because it has been quite some time since this was first noticed and i would not like to redo all the stuff i have done since then, but i guess its my only option if we cant figure this out.
