BSoD:

Just got myself another BSoD, and I need some help. Just a quick summary of my previous BSoD experiences:

I posted here because of this blue screen [http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/249049-bsod-0x50-win32k-sys.html], and I was able to fix it because I found out that my m0ther board was defective. Dell gave me a new one, and so far no memory problems. However, another problem that I kept having was BSoD 0x3B which kept pointing to win32k.sys. I reformatted my hard drive, but now a NEW blue screen has appeared.
Unfortunately, I was asleep when the blue screen happened, but according to the memory dump it was 0xc0000005. I will attach the dump here if you need it to take a look.

Help?

Ok the three types of BSOD's are all system related. I also found drivers on the system that were from as far back as 2006. they should be updated. Im not sure what SP you are running but you should:

If you are overclocking stop
Run a system file check to verify your system files.
to run a sfc you type cmd in search>right click and run as admin> sfc /scannow
let us know the results
When all of this is resolved you need to updat these drivers at least

Hope this helps

A newbie question, but I have been running Windows Update since I reformatted (yesterday). Is this not the right way to go about updating these specific drivers? And if not, how would I update these drivers? Also I will run sfc /scannow when I get home and post the results.

Windows updates may be a few weeks behind the manufacturer. for critical things I go to the mobo web site and video web sites.

When you are ready to start looking we can help you find them.

If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask

Here is the results of the sfc /scannow. It said that some files were corrupted but could not be fixed. I've seen it happen before, but I always worry. Thanks in advance for the help.

SFC can only repair some of the files. I have seen that running it a couple of times will fix that. But truth be told, you have damaged files, you're BSOD'ing.

At some point you should start thinking about a clean re-install. Its often faster, and easier than trying to patch an OS up. Its a PITA but sometimes you gotta

I just reinstalled my OS though? Or do you mean completely delete everything off of the hard drive and then reinstall vista?

No hold off.

Im pretty sure your problem is a combination of sotware and hardware. We have a baseline here. You just installed and have bsod's Can I assume you are not:

Overclocking
Have a raid
dont have something esoteric like a figerprint reader
have ram that is all the same (purchased at one time)

Have you upgraded the key drivers like BIOS, video, etc

Your assumptions are correct. And I just did all the reinstalls of my video and everything windows update recommended.

The dump file blames NTFS.SYS (which probably isn't to blame - but it does point to the Disk/file sub-system).

So, please run CHKDSK /R from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt. Answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter when it asks to run it at the next reboot - then reboot and let it run. Please post back if it encounters any errors.

Then, try this procedure to test for physical problems with the hard drive: HD Diagnostic
