BSOD won't let me log in.

The version of Vista I have is x64, and it's the original installed OS. It's OEM. The laptop is about a year old. The OS is the same age, and has not ever been re-installed.

The last thing that I can remember having changed on the system was an update of iTunes and of Java, which gave me a bit of trouble when I accidentally downloaded the 32-bit version instead of the x64 one--this may be inconsequential, but I wanted to at least mention it. Then, I got a BSOD flash in the middle of working. The computer restarted, and came up to the login screen. I tried to log in, but the blue screen flashed yet again and restarted the computer (again). This happens every time I try to boot Vista normally. The log in screen comes up, but before I can do anything, really, the process repeats itself. I've tried two system restores, two virus scans, a startup repair that said it couldn't fix anything automatically. I've been able to work through safe mode to reasearch the problem. That boots up fine. I've tried everything I can think of with my layman's knowledge, and I fear that I'll just have to do a full recovery and wipe the damn thing clean, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't some expert fix before I break down and do the full recovery. I have to wait to buy an external hard drive to do a backup, anyway.

Also, I have the jcgriff zip file, but the "perfmon / report" window gave me an error? I don't know why. It just says, "An error occurred while attempting to generate the report. The system cannot find the path specified." Might have just been a stupid misstep on my part, but I don't know.

Thanks a mil for your time and help.

I will begin with a disclaimer. Very rarely can BSODs be solved with only one report. It takes several reports to come to a definitive conclusion. That being said, I will advivse based upon the one that you have given.

The reports that you have submitted reveal clues to the cause of your problem. They do not give a definitive answer. The more reports that we receive the more clues are made available improving our chances of finding a solution to your problem. You may have to experience several more BSODs until the final answer is discovered.

Make sure that your graphics driver is updated.

If overclocking restore normal settings

SFC /scannow
System Files - SFC Command

Download memtest86 and test RAM

Scan with your Anti Virus

Update outdated listed drivers. If I have inadvertently listed any Microsoft Drivers, they can be ignored. If the list is extensive I have included the driver verifier test so that you may determine which drivers are in need of immediate attention.

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html
and here
http://www.edbott.com/weblog/the-vista-master-driver-list/
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper

Driver Verifier Inst
Since the driver that crashed you has not been listed you should run driver verifier
Please run Verifier with these settings:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.
So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).
Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like. From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.
Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).
Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.
If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
Enable the driver verifier
www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/65331-using-driver-verifier-identify-issues-drivers.html

After performing all of the above, post back with any new BSOD reports, or indicate that the attempted repairs were successful.
If any links do not work, if clicked, please copy and paste to browser address bar.
It is very important to remember that the dump reports only give clues as to the problem and although it is very easy to analyze only one or two, usually more are needed. If you experience additional BSOD after installing a current version of the driver in question, be sure to post so that we can use the additional information to assist you in preventing the BSOD's

Take your time and let me give you a few hints
We want to solve the BSOD problem and THE OLD DRIVERS MUST BE UPDATED
That being said, forget about the old drivers for now
Do the driver verifier test, that will weed out the the drivers that are a problem now.
Do the memory test and follow the other intstructions
When you are up and running work on the old driver, they are BSODs just waiting to happen.
