Hi,

My Vista Ultimate x32 install has been running fine for several months after my last reinstall when suddenly today it blue screened on boot with a "0x0000007E" error.

After multiple reboots, the BSOD still came up so I tried to reinstall. After it had to reboot during the install it suddenly blue screened again with the same error. Reboots after that alternate between 0x0000007E and 0x0000008E.

During this process it also eventually installed, booted into Windows and then it blue screened saying NDIS.sys was missing.

Unfortunately it now blue screens before I can even get into the install disk so I can't reinstall at all.

Any help?

Please look at the Usual Causes section in the following links.

What do you mean that it BSOD's before you can get to the install disk?
What is the make and model of your system (or make and model of the motherboard if it's a custom build)?

Heyy, welcome to the Vista Forum!:party:
Unfortunately I can't help with the error codes, but i can offer advice...

-Have you changed any hardware? Video cards, RAM, processor?
-Have you changed any settings in the BIOS?
-Have you installed any new programs on the computer?

If it comes to it, you could download Ubuntu, burn it onto CD (700MB) and boot from it, and use it to fully format the HDD so you can do a clean install.

Hope this helps you,
Daniel ;)

Hardware changes: Only recent one was to drop in a hard drive to run a disk check on it before removing it. Booted up successfully one time afterwards

No BIOS changes. Completely default apart from it using a RAID 0 setup

New programs: Only a few extra games from Steam, no new drivers recently

The BSOD before setup disk occurs in this order - Start boot from DVD -> "Loading Files" Dialogue -> "Please Wait" appears -> BSOD

System is a custom build but the Motherboard is an ASUS P5N32 - E SLI

It sounds like broken hardware to me.

Start with these free, bootable diagnostics:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Let the memory test run overnight.
We've noticed some issues with RAM in P5 series motherboards (but nothing this severe).
Check with the RAM manufacturer and Asus for the proper settings/timings/voltages for your RAM (DON'T use the AUTO setting).

I can't find the correct settings for my RAM anywhere. The maker is Elixir and the type is M2Y2G64TU8HB0J-25D

EDIT: I got hold of the timings from the manufacturer and then proceeded to boot up up in Ubantu. From it I reformatted my hard disk and then reinstalled Vista. It now gets to just past the scrolling loading bar before blue screening with 0x0000007E and 0x0000008E errors.

Going to run the memtest and disk tests now

EDIT2: Just tried booting into windows a few more times, it now comes up with 0x000000C5 and 0x0000007F errors every so often

Ran Memtest, errors almost instantly.

Going to get hold of some new memory.

EDIT: removed the faulty stick and then tried installing Windows Vista. This time I reccived a 0x00000001
