Hi All,
I know you love a challange so hope someone can help.

I have been gettting the dreaded BSOD on DELL laptop running Vista.

I have uninstalled all recent software except for I-tunes (as it is time consuming to set up again). I have also uninstalled some of my drivers that have been updated lately.

Problem started in mid Feb.

A selection of Minidump file is attached. - Mini022511-05.dmp seemed like a nasty one.

Crashes happen straight away when in normal mode and sometimes in Safe Mode.

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 3081
Additional information about the problem:

Try uninstalling your Mcafee AV and or Firewall..
Test with Microsoft Security Essentials and the Windows Firewall.
After those adujustments if you still get a BSOD, post and I will give you a full analysis.
One of 4 reports point to Mcafee and you have recently downloaded new drivers from Mcafee.

You should also download SP2

Thanks for the tips.

trying to install service pack 2 now. But so far slow going at windows crashes when it tries to restart. Now re-starting in Safe mode after another crash.

My Computer

got to installing part 3 of 3, 71% complete and then keep crashing and restarting at 68%.

Not sure where to go from here as I'm not up to speed enough to run code directly from the boot page. but BSOD is attached.

Hello again.

Well it took a while but after about 16 crashes Windows service pack failed to install and was re-configured to original settings (SP_1).
Macfee was uninstalled - again crashing the computer several times and not solving the underlying cause

Minidumps from the last two days are attached.

any thoughs?

Using a little art and a little science, Im going with a driver. Take the Driver verifier test. Read and understand the precautions
If that is negative, Im thinking maybe memory

Driver Verifier Inst
Since the driver that crashed you has not been listed you should run driver verifier
Please run Verifier with these settings:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.
So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).
Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like. From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.
Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).
Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.
If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Thanks Richard,

Normally I'd give you suggestions a go. But since I don't have the windows install CD handy I think this will be a bit too risky. I'm probably going to drop the computer into a shop for repair... so I figure better to drop it in while it's still working in safe mode rather than when it's not able to boot up at all. Do you suggest I upgrade to Window's 7 while I'm at it?

One last thought I had was that maybe there was a bug in one of the Windows updates that went through on 12 Feb. I haden't completed an auto update for a while and on this day there where about 30 updates installed. Could this be the case? I've heard of freinds having trouble with XP after updating (also in Feb)

I cant tell you what to do with Seven.
But I have facts
I use Seven and like it
Vista is on the way out, will not be supported much longer
You can get an upgrade Seven for only about $100.
It would be the right thing for me.
