I think a better bet would be to Upgrade your HDD if you have a space issue. Compressing the entire system Volume is not recommended.
notebook and desktop HDD's are cheap you can get a 320GB 7200rpm, or 500GB, or even 1TB drives for less than a $100.http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=15&name=Hard-Drives

You can use Vista's Disk imaging backup utility to image your HDD, insert the upgraded HDD and re-install the drive exactly as it was in like 15min or so. Then just go to the manage utility and extend the volume into the new unallocated space.

so what you're saying is that there's no other way to do it other than what you've suggested??

Im running a desktop PC and have recently upgraded my HDD to 80GB (IDE). C: got 40GB.

I have heard of compression of Vista but it comes alongwith "BOOTMGR compressed" issue. I just wanted to have such compression without that issue since, to be honest, Im so much use to of compression with my prior XP experience that I can't imagine operating without it.

Umm,
80GB upgrade? wow that is very little

perhaps you should consider a 250GB HDD? System restore/Shadow Copy reserves 15% of your HDD just for restore points and checkpoint backups.

You can compress the system volume, but it will not boot. Hard drives are so cheap. 80GB is nothing (especially for Vista Ultimate). I run (2) 320GB drives in raid 0 for a combined space of 640GB HDD, and then use another 320GB external for data backup, and that space fills up fast.

Vista Ultimate includes a Complete PC backup Utility (Image), takes like 20 min to completely restore the pc from one disk to another, and if you upgraded to a larger capacity all you do is go to the Manage utility and extend the volume to span the new HDD.

For Vista regardless if you have notebook, or desktop, I recommend at least a 250GB drive.
