bootmgr missing cannot start windows

hi ive been transferring files to my external hdd recently and it froze so i restarted laptop corrupting external hdd and and the laptop. when i start the it up it say bootmgr missing cannot find operating sytems i would reinstall vista but its my sisters old laptop and she dint get one with it or make one for that matter is there anyway i cant bypass this or download a fix on to a disk thanks

If it does not, there is a key number on the computer. It says OEM somewhere in the 25 didets and letters. You can use any DVD, as long as its the same Edition, example home premium. You can get a DVD for cost from the computer company.

think that only works with a boot disk i tried using the medion reinstall disk with xp but blue screen with stopped and load of numerals came up think im just guna bin it rather then folk out 30 quid on a disk wen its a few year old anyway cheers for info though

I believe I read that any disk can be used and that the edition (home, home premium, etc) is tied to the serial number. I don't know if that's true.

I heard that too, but not sure If any doubt use a DVD for the correct edition. When there is an OEM key, there are special condiderations. Sometimes a DVD from the computer vendor is required.
