There isn't an easy way of doing this, I've been there and done that.

Some things to consider are:
If it is possible to move the router to a different phone socket nearer the laptop.
If the router and laptop both support 5MHz instead of just 2.4MHz (5MHz is supposedly better at penetrating walls etc.)
If your router is set to the correct region (some regions allow stronger broadcast signals than others)
If both your router and laptop are 'N' certified.
If you can change the WiFi channel to something with supposedly less interference (maybe channel 1 or 2)

If none of this works (which to be honest it probably won't) you may want to try something similar to the solution I'm using.
You broadcast your Internet connection over the mains within your house via an ethernet cable connected from your router to a special plug; you then have a recieving plug on the other end which you can either plug directly into your laptop via Ethernet or plug that Ethernet cable into an Ethernet only router (eg Apple airport Express) and then have a second WiFi network which reaches the computers that the first cannot.

Have a look at the Netgear Internet over mains thing at Amazon I use this my self and it's absolutely amazing, I really recommend it.

Have a look at the Airport Express at Apple (United Kingdom) - AirPort Express , I also use this and can thoroughly recomend it as well.

Hope I've helped.

Hmm, I have an extra router that i dont use, so could i use that extra router to make a wireless access point from the router that i have my dsl modem plugged into? Andim thinking of changing the channel, becasue there are alot of other routers around the area ( i live in an apartment), and i think most of the other routers use ch 6 as default right? hmm and i also want to use the spare router that i have as a wap to the original router without using ethernet cables, as i dont have long ones. or how do i make a spare router as a repeater, because i dont want to use ethernet cables.

Hello Katokato, looks like you have received some good advice so far!

The one thing I am wondering is if the signal down stairs is weak, is the repeating router going to be able to receive a good enough signal to repeat? I don't know.

I would like to know why the signal won't reach downstairs? You will have to think about your surroundings and the placement of the router. I am sure you are limited by the DSL connection? Is it possible to move the router to a location upstairs more favorable for signal broadcast?

The one problem with a repeater that receives the wireless signal and then rebroadcasts the signal is the 'speed' is reduced substantially. A second (bridged) router connected by cable then broadcasting a wireless signal does not suffer the same loss.

I think it would help to know what models of routers you have if we are going to bridge one to the other?

Cheers!
Robert

The router that is connected to my dsl modem is a linksys wrt54g2 v1 router, and my spare router that i want to extend the signal is a linksys wrt54gs. So how would i go about setting up the wireless extension thing?as depicted in the post before this one? i tihink i want to bridge my 2 routers wirelessly as i dont have a long ethernet cable.

when i got to upgrade my router firmware to dd-wrt, it gives me an Upgrade Are Fail error. Ive tried upgrading with other dd-wrt bin files but none of them seem to work.

hey check the options of getting a repeater,, a dlink or somethg.. its not that expensive I think?? what you reakon.. but you can still try to chnage uor router to a "bridge one"

My Computer

I kinda want to bridge a router, cuz i dont want to spend money on a repeater, and i also need more knowledge on routers. Im asking on the dd-wrt forums.

I found these instructions in a manual for WRT54G:

As there are many versions of this router / software, yours may be different?

Cheers!

My Computer

So its saying if i choose router mode then it will be like as if i selected bridged mode on a dd-wrt web gui? If thats the case, then i dont need to update firmware, i just neeed to set the defult gateway an disable dhcp and all of that other mumbo jumbo.
