black screen

hey everyone

I was away for a week and I get back and turn my computer on. everything loads as per normal, until just after the rolling green load bar. my monitor loses the signal and then picks it up again but all that is there is a black screen with the mouse pointer. is it a driver problem? or is it a virus? does anyone know?

this happened to me when i bought a refurb lappy and also safe mode wouldn't work.
either corrupted files or you will need a clean install of vista.
