bios update for gateway

I am trying to update my bios to get rid of blue screen and have folllowed the instructions from gateway - downloaded the file , burned a disk , restarted. But the machine does not boot from the cd it startes normally and does not start the flash update. My bios are currently set to boot first from cd then hard drive but it does not recognize what is in the cd. Please help

You have to create a bootable disc and take all the necessary precaution as flashing BIOS might brick your motherboard.

I created my cd just using windows. Does that create a "bootable" cd

The instructions are in that link for creating a bootable disc, I advise you to read more about BIOS flashing and obtain as much information as you can and don't do it in a hurry.
I am not trying to scare you but it's better to be safe than sorry, disable any background services, disconnect Internet, disable any Antivirus programs, disconnect any Printers. You shouldn't interrupt the BIOS flashing by moving the mouse or switching off the PC.

the disk does not work. Gateway told me do double click on the autoexec file. when I do a screen comes up that wants me to enter 1 to update the bios. when I do a screen flashes and then goes away. Is there some trick to let a vista computer update the bios?

I think you need a competent person's help, take it to a local PC repair shop or get in touch with Gateway Technicians.
What happens now when you switch on? is it responding?
