Solved BIOS HardDrive & SMART

Airbot

---------------
Can anyone elaborate on the HDD SMART feature? Such as can it cause any problems being enabled or does it cause more cpu usage. And why is it disabled by default? Just wondering. :D

Hello Airbot,

This link will give you a lot more details about HDD Smart. I have not had any problems with it enabled in the BIOS. In fact I would recommend it to be enabled in Vista to help warn you of a possible hard drive failure since Vista is capable of using this if enabled.

re: BIOS HardDrive & SMART

I use SMART and it has indeed worked for me. Used to use a 250GB Samsung HDD, and began having problems like long access times, then one day when I booted up, SMART flashed up at my POST saying "HDD failure imminent. Back up now" or something along them lines. And the HDD did indeed die soon after.

It should say in the hard drive specifications. Most new SATA hard drives today are though.

I can confirm this. Was testing an older 40 GB drive (date of manufacture back in '01 sometime) before using in my kids computer and got the warning about impending drive failure from Vista; no waring from the bios, but Vista definitely saw it and reported it.
