Best x64 OS for FSX ?

Hi everyone,

I just built a rig for FSX to train myself for flying. I lashed out and got a Vertex SSD from OCZ as they are supposed to be the bomb for speed. now I know I just want to play FSX only, I have a high end gaming system built.. but my OS is troubling me. I have installed x64 ultimate Vista and It takes up over 35 GIG of space by the time I got all the updates . My Fsx takes up the other 25 Gig no problem and with just these 2 my SSD is full to the brim and slow as hell. What can I do?

1. install a different version? like home basic or business vista x64??
2. remove lots of un-needed stuff from ultimate? if so what?

cheers

SSDs have extremely low access times but not particularly spectacular read and write stats. Their main benefit, therefore, is when dealing with lots and lots of small files, for example during system boot.

Reading a small number of comparatively large DLLs off an SSD is going to be slower than a top-end HDD, unless you're running some $$$ latest 'n' greatest gizmo which probably cost more than the rest of the components put together. Therefore, the benefit to be gained from installing FSX onto the SSD may be limited, or even net-negative (it's slower than a HDD used for that purpose).

My suggestion would be to leave the OS on the SSD but to put your apps, games, and data on a fast HDD like a (Seagate) Barracuda or a (WD) Velociraptor.

Hi

Thanks very much. I had considered doing this also but was not sure if it would be useful. as you pointed out, it is actually SLOWER now than when on the HDD !!! ARGHHH... that thing cost me 300 bucks. oh well, i'll leave the OS on it and shift the rest onto a Raptor

Thanks

Consider this a lesson learned to performing some research before spending alot of money on something.... :-)

thanks

I finally took the plunge and invested in a RAID 5 array several months ago! The system was amazing (Vista Ultimate x64).

A clean install of Vista to the Desktop took 20 minutes! EIP score for the RAID array was around 7.9
