Backup Failure

Greetings,
I am a user and def not a techie, but have a question I hope to benefit from your expertise. I am using Vista Home Premium.

I tried to back up my hard drive to a Western Digital removable HD using Vista Backup and Restore. The backup failed and I got a message that read:

"The backup target drive G:\ failed with the following error:
The backup disk has a corrupted file system. Fix it using the disk error checking tool or choose a different backup location. (0x81000008) "

I cannot find "the disk error checking tool". I have backed up using this removable HD a couple of times already.

Any suggestions??
Thanks a lot.

Foxfire51,

You may not have to change your external HD to NTFS. The most common explanation for changing from FAT32 to NTFS is that FAT32 cant support files larger than 4 gigabytes. However that is not the problem this time (more than likely). Another difference is that NTFS supports multiple connections (two services using the HD at the same time). Sometimes there are services that are using your external HD when you dont know it. See if you cant find something else using your HD and stop it from using it. If you can the backup should work.

No problem. For me it was that i was using a TV tuner so that i could record shows. I had it set so that the shows would be recorded to my external HD. If you are doing that, just unplug the TV tuner and it will run like a charm.
