AVI files won't open in DVD Maker

Hi, there. I'm new here and everything, but I've been looking over the forum for the past couple of days because I encountered an irritating problem with my avi files. It seems that only some types of avi videos will open into DVD maker, and others will completely freeze up my computer before the software tells me it's an invalid file type.

The thing is, the files play in Media Player, I've downloaded all the codec packs imaginable, and I've even tried converting the files to mpeg and wmv. The problem with that is that the conversion software even freaks out. It will completely freeze and mess with my computer's speed. I did manage to load one of the tricky avi's into DVD Flick, but it took a long time. And then the second time I tried it, the whole thing crashed and I lost my project. It's like there's absolutely no way around those devils.

However long I searched, I couldn't even find a solution on this forum. It seems like this question has come up a lot, and this whole mess is really driving me crazy. I feel like tearing my hair out; all I want is my videos on DVD! :( Does anyone have any inkling of an idea of how to fix these freakish avi files, or how to get DVD maker to support them?
