I have just tried to edit an .avi video in Windows Movie Maker, but when I drag it into the timeline, it is only recognized as having audio. The screen is black, but I can hear the audio. What should I do?

But I'll take a quick shot. I take it you can play this avi in a player and it seems normal?
How complicated an edit do you need? If it's not fancy effects, just slicing and splicing you
might try AviDemux.
I'm not familiar with Movie Maker. I'm mainly into format conversions and joining as opposed to editing.

Download and install this codec pack:
Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 6.1.0 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 6.1.0 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 6.1.0 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools
Then try to import the AVI into WMM, it works for me
