I'm currently running McAfee Internet Security. Yesterday I was talking to my computer tech who said he didn't like McAfee and recommended the free version of AVG and windows Firewall. Any thoughts on this?

AVG is very nice Anti Virus which give often updates. Where it can be good at finding many common and older virus. User Friendly interface which allows great navigation for beginners and a advance mode for user with more experience in tech deck geeky stuff. ( jk guys i love you all ) It doesn't all ways do the trick for me, because in the past I've had virus that infected deep into the computer (most likey becuase the stuff i try to test and download). While it's scans can take some time it dose get the job done if your on a tight budget. I've rated it 8/10 overall ^_^ It can become one of those LOVE & Hate kind of things

Thanks for the information. Does anyone know if McAfee is particularly difficult to uninstall (like Norton which is virtually impossible to get rid of), or can you just go to control panel>uninstall program and take it out? Thanks again.

Hi Fred44,

It can sometimes be a Pain, a bit like Norton. Follow these steps and you will be fine.

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

The above link is for the Mcafee removal tool. Download and run.

If you dont think it's removed it all, then

  1. GO TO c:\program files\windows\ and remove all files in this folder.
  2. Return to "Add and Remove Programs" in the Windows Control Panel, highlight McAfee Security Center and click on remove.
  3. Close all windows and restart the computer. Insert the CD and reinstall the McAfee security center, if necessary.
  4. If this does not work, run "services.msc" and set properties on all McAfee services to disabled and recovery to "none". Reboot computer and remove with "Add and Remove Programs"
Thanks, Glenn

I just got the message below in my email with a link to this forum, but when I log onto the forum the message is not here! You will also note that "archie" provided me with a link which showed how many viruses were "missed" by various anti-virus applications. Is this spam and was it deleted by a moderator? Just curious.

Glenn,
Thanks for the information, but I'm a bit confused. Why would I reinstall McAfee if I'm going to install AVG. Also, are you saying run the removal tool before going to "Add Remove Programs"?

Your computer tech's recommendation is an opinion only. Many members here will hold different views for a variety of reasons. [However I would second your tech's advice.] Why don't you give AVG free a trial run & see what you think?

Horses for courses guys...as a Tech I have found most AV progs do the job fine, with the rider that what is great on one will interfere on another. For example..I have never had an issue with Free AVG...have used it on a lot of customers systems...but on two recent XP clean instals..found it to slow the system down like treacle..yet no probs on similar systems. Again, have found a few Vista systems that don't like it for some strange reason. Avira is my current "preferred",closely followed by Avast!.Same thing with anti-spyware ...some set-ups like some ,some don't..no hard and fast rule, however my preferred ones are:SpywareTerminator,SpyBot S&D,MalwareBytes. I don't think one can be definitive on what is generally best,it seems to be a case of researching to find the "best"selection...then trying each until the best-for-the-system is found. Of course, personal preference as far as the level of program-control-of-system also comes in..lots of people prefer to be in full control whilst some programs want to have full control. Some governing factors are : the level of user expertise/knowledge ,user level of tolerance re pop-ups/prompts etc, size of the program "footprint" or level of resource control,e.g.: Nortons and a few other 'big' names are extremely resource hungry leading to less power/speed for actual computing. In short...a veritable mine-field,particularly for the novice or occasional user.
