AVG 8.5 Build 364 Vista 64 install problem

New Member
When trying to install both the free and trial/fee 8.5 Build version of AVG under Vista 64 receive the following error msgs:
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file sc.dat: creating file....
Error 0xe001042c
Rollback:
Error: Action failed for file sc.dat: removing file....
Error 0x80070005 %PATH% = "C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG8\sc.dat"
Error 0x80070005

Searching AVG site shows these msgs are security/privilege related so tried executing the downloaded .exe file by clicking on run in administrator mode with same results.
Then tried running it with the hidden administrator ID with the same results.
Any suggestions?

Ugashik Bob,
Welcome.
A few questions for you -
Is this a new computer that you are trying to install AVG on?
What anti virus has been previously installed on the computer?

[BTW - I also note that you mention Vista 64 in your query but in your System specs you say 32 bit. Please clarify.]

JMH:
The computer is a Vaio AW110J that I've had just over a month. Had previously installed a trail version of Kaspresky AV but removed it with Revo uninstaller including the registry clueanup.
Sorry about the profile. Am running Visto Home Premium 64 bit.

Further check - Your new computer had no preinstalled anti virus trial prog installed? I gather you installed the Kaspersky.

Suggest you also use the appropriate Kaspersky removal tool [ via support ] as well, just to be sure......;)
Remnants of uninstalled anti virus progs are frequently found lurking even after so called thorough cleaning up.

[Incidentally FYI - I use AVG Anti Virus Pro even though it is not the "flavour of the current time."]

JMH:
Downloaded the uninstall utility from Kaspresky and the second stage of the tool found and removed some remaining pieces. After that I still found files in the Program Data folder and removed them manually.
After AVG failed to install I tried Avast but uninstalled it then downloaded there uninstall tool and removed even more.
Still fails and says there is another av product installed but I can find no traces of it in either the program files or the programs files (x86) folders.
Also run the install in admin mode and have disabled windows defender and firewall.

The clean up of "uninstalled" anti virus progs can be a real pain & time consuming.

I suggest that you resist the temptation to try to install another AV prog until your computer is properly cleaned.

Other points to check -
What is listed as showing in your Security Centre?
Did you click the orb & do a search for any AV remnants left from the progs you had already downloaded & uninstalled?
Recheck in Prog Data files etc making sure that hidden files & folders are showing.
Did you reboot after uninstalling the unwanted AV progs & after using the uninstall tools?

As a precaution -
Make sure Defender & the firewall are turned back on.
Are you operating with "protected mode" turned on?
Use the www very carefully in the meantime. :)

AVG has been causing a few odd issues on both Vista and Win7 (32 and 64) for awhile now. I advise my clients to allow me to remove and put on one that is known to be OK. Lots out there and for a free one it's hard to go past Avira at the moment. Small footprint and light on resources while being amongst the top few AV programs.

Hello to the "Taswegan",
That may well be correct in some cases.
FWIW - I have AVG Pro installed on 2x Vista Ultimate 64-bit laptops here, & I also ran it on two prior laptops with XP Pro. I see no valid reason to change. If it ain't broke why fix/ swap it? BTW - The local AVG Australian support is tops too.

Hi JMH, Yes mate..you are right ..on some systems AVG performs well...but on others a disaster. Seems to be documented as as an issue...but oddly with no resolution. I have had a couple (5 to date) over the past few months with issues of slowing down, some progs not responding etc..and AVG was the culprit. Why this happens ,no-one seems to know. The other worrying thing is the bloatware which seems to be infecteing everything nowadays..including AVG. Personally I hate anything that also carries other non-essential crap like toolbars, search engines etc. etc. Ok for techs..we know what to leave out...but unsuspecting everday Mum's & Dads get caught with the bloatware all the time. In an area like mine, where the demographic is predominantly aged and occasional users,a lot of systems are low-end and simply can't cope with a lot of unnecessary resource sapping programs and so they end up with all sorts of issues.May be good for business..but bad for the owners health & temper. lol

ran both of these:
avgremoverx64.exe
AVGIDPUninstaller.exe

When I attempt to install AVG a msg prompts me that another AV is installed (which I can't find) and the installation continues. After several modules install you can see it then start to uninstall. The avgremoverx64 tool has a very long log created including a very detailed analysis of the registry in which it finds nothing installed from AVG. Stranger than science.

lol..used to be both or any other combination of beverage going. Morro will have to prove to be better than MS's previous attempts. Far better to stick to a program designed by dedicated security companies IMHO, JMH.I have found that the more 'advanced' the security programs become the harder they are to uninstall cleanly. I don't understand why most of the uninstallers do not do a clean enough uninstall, leaving too much junk behind. We should not have to go get cleanup tools everytime we uninstall these programs.

Have you used anything like CCLeaner to clean your system? I'd use some "cleaner" progs, incl. a defrag before installing your new AV.,as there are often remnants left even after using the maker's removal tools.

Couldn't agree more. Remnants can cause so much system instability, wasted time & frustration hunting the bits that lurk behind.

Ugashik Bob,
What a problem we have here involving Kaspersky, AVG & Avast!
What a valuable lesson you are learning. [ Most of us have been in your current situation at some time, although not with 3 anti virus progs installed / uninstalled in fairly quick succession. ]

I suggest your current options are
1.Do some computer "housework." [ disk cleanup, defrag, error checking ]
2.Get help from a tried & trusted local tech person near you. There is no shame in doing this.
3.If confident - Run in Safe mode - re run the 3 appropriate uninstall tools again. Reboot,
4.Delve into the registry via regedit. THIS CAN BE QUITE DANGEROUS UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
5.Although I don't generally recommend registry cleaners, & if you MUST use one, I agree with tasaholic re
CCleaner, but the slim build
- CCleaner - Builds

Good luck & please keep us posted.

Hmmm...maybe you're right,it sure does cause some people a few hassles.;)

My Computer

1. Ran CCleaner Slim
2. Ran Ckdsk OK then cleanup then defrag.
3. Downloaded every AV uninstall pgm I could find.
4. Ran uninstall pgms again with AVG being the only one that really found anything.
5. Ran Windows installer Clean up and it detected nothing that appeared to be AV
6. Same with Revo uninstaller.
7. Ran AVG install with same errors.

I live in a very remote area of Alaska and not anyone local. Appreciate the help here.

Well, after doing 1 to 6, your system should be free of remnants. [don't like 7 though. ] Time will tell.
Is your computer stable & running smoothly?

Alaska eh. The remoteness appeals, but the severe cold. Brrrrrrrrr!
Good luck. [Please return if you have further questions.]

Ahh that sucks. Can you try installing any other AV like Avast?
BTW, if you are looking for a good free Av program, i will recommend go for Avast. :)
