audio settings

Actually i bought compaq laptop with vista. later i changed it to xp. after that when i connect headphones to my laptop i`m listening sound both from headphones and my laptop speakers. what should i do to listen sound only in my head phones?

It's probably a setting involved but I have no way of knowing what sound system you are using on your PC. Perhaps you can give more details
