audio service

i must see a million of these threads but none of them are anything like what i have going on, i've tried all the fixes for the others to no avail.

my story starts the same, my volume button in the task bar has the red x on it, how ever here is where it changes,

registry : no audiosrv under local control set or any of the other control sets
servies tap of task manager : no windows audio service there
msconfig: no windows audio service there either

its like the windows audio service vanished off my computer and on top of not having sound on my computer i, for some reason as well i can not do a system resotore, to try to see if that fixes te problem with the audio, all i get is an error. this is what that says

"system restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system.

the Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log.
(0x81000202)"

i've had no sound on my computer for at least 2 months, and from what i gather from reading everyone else's posts about it it has all happened around the same time, back in january on 2010, atleast 80-90% of the people who have put out this kind of error has said it started around that month.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

Hi,

Unfortunately, you have a huge number of corrupt files. I would recommend Slipstreaming your Vista DVD to SP2 and doing a repair install. You will not lose your programs and data (though you should have them backed up just in case).

Here is how to do a repair install: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Here is how to slipstream your Vista DVD to SP2: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/230249-sliptream-vista-sp2.html

However, if you would like, we can try to repair your current install. This will involve extracting and using the files from your Vista DVD. This is because your backup store of files for SFC to copy from is just as corrupt as your main install. If you would like to take this route, then run SFC once more and upload the new log file. I would then recommend slipstreaming your Vista DVD to SP2 so that we are not putting horrendously old files onto your new SP2, and we will then extract the files into your System directories one at a time.

Doing a repair/clean install may save you grief later, but I am understand perfectly the wish to not wipe everything (I avoid clean installs when I really should not as well)

thank you sir, first person to give me that straight of an answer instead of saying, do this, try that, go here and follow these steps.

so i will most likely end up doing a fresh instal, i will loose all my saved passwords and have to try to find the vista drivers again, but thats not a big deal, worth it so i can hear sound again, ha!

thanks again
