Assertion Failure!

I've been trying to sort this out for weeks. Hopefully someone can help me here. I have been trying to hook up a weather station to my new home computer. After two weeks of trying a USB to serial adapter I decided to by an IO gear GUC232A not knowing if my other one was Vista compatible. Well I still get the same error. Any idea's welcome.

I don't know about the particular software but an Assert() is a debug function. If the expression in the function results in NULL it spits out an error and quits. The idea is to avoid trying to read non-existent memory or doing something else that would result in a crash while debugging the software. Once you change to "release mode" all the assert calls go away. Looks like the software is still the debug version. :)
