Appearance during shutdown

Just recently, when I shut down or restart, my computer no longer goes from the desktop -- to black screen -- and then restart or shutdown.

The screen is black around the outside, but in the center you still say a "fade out" of the desktop background -- then it goes to black and goes through the normal process.

This isn't causing me any problems as far as using the computer, but I'm assuming this signals some kind of problem. Does anyone know what is causing this?

Maybe we can help
Go to search by the start button
Type device manager
In Manager look for any small yellow markers
If found update those drivers and the graphics driver
If none are found update only graphics.
If you still have the problem, do a system restore from one week before the problem began.

There are no yellow markers in Device Manager.

The last time I tried to update my display adaptor (NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE) I ended up having to do a factory restore. I'm sure you are right but don't know if I have the courage to try and update that display adaptor again. It says that the device is working properly.

What's the worst case scenerio if I just let it go and do nothing?

Can you offer any written courage? :o

My restore points go back to 12/6 and I know this has been happening longer than that. I know when I explained it, I used the term "just recently."

It has been recent, but I'm sure it's been going on, probably closer to a month. I don't shut my computer down, and sometimes I don't have any reason to do restarts either, so everything to do with this seems pretty recent.

If it is a hardware error you can lose your stuff, back up everything, now
If it is software, it can be fixed more easily, but again back up. After you are fully backed up we will try to fix, but you may lose your stuff, so back up.

Hi Nikilet,

In addition to what richc46 has mentioned, we can perform few troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue:

1. Try to restart your computer then go to Safe mode and check if the problem persists. Please use the following link for detailed instructions to go safe mode: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/123496-safe-mode.html
2. If it works fine in safe mode try performing a clean boot to find the root cause. Please use the following link for detailed instructions to perform clean boot: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

If issue persists, run the built-in diagnostics provided by the manufacturer on the computer to check if the hardware is working fine.

Please post the results.
