Okay So I get my hands on a Brand New copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and decided that its time to Upgrade my Computer. I buy 4 Gb's or Ram and New E6400 and and Seagate Baracuda 150 Gb Sata Drive. So Im ready to got right? This is my current System Setup
Asus P5L-MX Mobo
4 GBs Kingston PC5300 667
Intel E6400
EVGA 8600 GTS 256MB PCI-E
Antec truelife 380Wat Powersupply
Segate Baracuda 160GB Sata HD

Okay so I go ahead and Install Vista Ultimate 64 bit and everything is going smoothly. OS gets installed and the first Issue I run into is my onboard Nic is not recognized. Well Good thing I dloaded all the drivers ahead of time so I load the nic drivers and boom got internet again. Now I relize I have no sound.. This Turns out to be an extremly difficuly process I get the drivers installed and I have sound. So i try to jump on Teamspeak and lo and behold my mic does not work. Long Story Short 2 hours later I finally get my mic working...Cant Tell you exactley what I did but there was allot of Unistallinig and reinstalling of drivers involved with this LOL. So while Im messing around with the sound card I relize Whoops I have 45 updates from microsoft to do .. okay plug away so I go ahead and do all the updates. Everything is going well now... SO I decided it time to install Call of Duty 4 ..Get it installed I replace my players folder so I can keep my stats and load the game.

No later then 10 mins and I get a complete Lock of my Machine. No sound nothing. So I pissed I restart my machine check the Log and I am Getting an EVENT ID 12 Fatal Bus Interconnect Error. Now I know what you all are thining but No its not a Hardware Issue. I tested everything and Every Topic I found with people having the event ID 12 error say the same thing. What I also noticed was I had a Spool Server Error right befor the Crash.. Which is Mighy Interesting because I dont Own A Printer. ( I know in this day and Age lol) But anyways.. I was also getting a Event 1530 error which I tracked down to being a Problem with Windows Bit Defender which I promplty Turned off. Now I have Done all the HotFixes windows would let me do Everytthing is compeltly updated and I Disabled the Print Spooler. So now I have narrowed it down to the only time this Happens is while i am in game. IE the only game I have installed right now is Call of duty 4 . Which would lead one to belive this must be a Hardware Issue Right. Well Something diffrent happens when I crash now. Now instead of no sound I get a Looping sound at Crash. I know Your going to ask Yes I have been running Teamspeak and Yes I have tested this with and wihtout it running as I am aware that there is and issue with one of the
TS audio files that is plauging some people. So I have narrowed this down to I belive this has something to do with CAll of Duty 4 . I have even tried reinstalling my Video Card. Mainly because when I flashed my Bios my video crad deleted itself. ( Mind you I was having the issue befor the Bios Flash.. Anyone have any problems with Asusupdater in Vista 64 as I got a wierd post error about overclocking after I flashed the bios with this which is odd cause I do not overclock anything, )

SO that is where Im sitting. Banging my head agaisnt a wall the only thing I havent tried is a Fresh install of Vista.. Oh BTW one more question. Does SP1 autodownload itself or do I have to download it manually as I am new to Vista this may be the only thing I have not tried

It seems u are involved in a big problem. Many things can go wrong with hardware. Everytime ms releases its os or patch, a list of thorough compatibility tests are passed. So merely dropping your criticism on os is not fair. The issue may arise with:
1. driver bugs
2. internal interconnection (weak wire, loosely plugged head...)
3. the motherboard is often the source of wierd hw recognizing issue (and many other), try a diff mb to see if this is solved.
4. memory quality
5. os is incorrectly installed
...

the sp1 has not yet offically published (except the RC version), you do not need to manually dl it as ms update will do this for u.

From what I see on your system specs it looks like you're problems are with the PSU.
350W just isn't enough to run everything including an 8600GTS video Card.
I'd cringe if it where me booting this system up with such a small PSU, IMHO.

My Computer

Does it Say 350 Im sorry its supposed to say 380 Watt powers supply.. the 8600 GTS only nees a 350w to run and I never had a problem with it in XP PRo

This could be one issue... I would def think about an upgrade to that PSU... although I'm sure you have check to make sure none of your drivers have auto updated from MS update.... sometimes a simple driver swap can play havek on your system... verify your DLed version to currently installed version.... your problem reminds me of a sound card issue I used to have... Vista apparently has issues with sound cards and drivers...

Just my .02 hope you get it fixed!

yeah as I said befor I had a ton of issue with my sound card at first but I finally got it worked out.. I have a built in Soundmax on my mobo that Im using.

Wow, your psu is really low wattage for all that stuff.

You dont figure out your wattage by your video card alone, you have to add in your hard drives, (SATA drives use huge amounts of power), and other components.

Otherwise, did you do an upgrade, or a full install?

I've had problems where I called Microsoft and they reinstalled my system from scratch then all the problems went away. ( no detection of printers, video cards, and the like)

Since this is almost a new custom build, have you stress tested the new setup yet? This would be a good way to see if your PSU is up to snuff. Check this link for a list of utils you can use. Keep an eye on your temperatures as well during these tests (Intel TAT). See if your PC is stable to run these utilities. (forgive me if you're familiar with all this stuff)

Otherwise, you should also start eliminating the culprits. Does the PC crash when playing other games? Try uninstall the audio card completely and use the onboard only. The mobo also has onboard video you could use instead of the 8600gts, but I dunno if your games will even run on the onboard...worth a shot though to see if it's related to your card.
