Anyone else having trouble with new (8.1) ATI Drivers (x64)

These drivers seem to have made Games really unstable? Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a Hotfix, I know ATI love to hide them away on obscure pages.

I can't say for sure, but I believe the 8.1 drivers caused a major problem on my system. My system is only several weeks old, and everything was running perfectly. About 20 minutes after installing 8.1, my system would lock up from anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes of being on. I would get the top 1/3 rd of the screen to get a black band across the screen, then all controls would freeze (even cntrl./alt/del didn't do anything. I tried a system restore but with no hope. To make a long story short, I had to wipe the hard drive and re-install Vista.....ERRRR!

Since the re-install, I've styed with the driver just before 8.1, and I'm too nervous to try running 8.1

I'm gonna stay with Cataylst 7.12 for some time.

So far working flawlessly here, with 2 HD3870 in Crossfire. System is fairly fresh, though, so it might account for that, but I have not had any problems whatsoever with either the cards or the 8.1 drivers...

I have what appears to be a major problem with the x64 ATI 8.1 drivers. When I plug in any USB thumb drive or USB external hard drive my system locks up and then either restarts or just sits there.

One time I was "lucky" enough to get a Memory Stop ID 0x000000116. That was a new one for me, so I did a search on it and found that it was related to a graphics driver issue. The system build is less than a week old; I have listed the specifications below. Is there anyone else out there that uses an ATI Radeon series card and is having the same problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Specifications:

MSI K9A Platinum board with BIOS v1.8 (latest)
AMD Athlon X2 6000+ @ 3.0GHz
4GB (4 x 1GB) DDR2 6400 Patriot RAM
ATI Radeon X1950 256MB DDR3
500GB Seagate SATA

Well, I think I have found the true cause of my problems with anything USB exlcuding printers.

I currently have a 480W power supply, but am demanding close to 540W from it. No wonder I was crashing out of the blue and why I was not being able to plug anything else onto the board/USB/PCI/etc.

I hope that I have found the solution to my problem. I will post if I don't destory my computer first. Thanks for the help!

UPDATE: I have not been able to get a new power supply ordered and am glad that it has turned out this way since another person seems to be experiencing a similar problem.

You mentioned something about something about USB hotfixes for Vista. Would any of these updates be included in SP1 by chance? Could you please elaborate on your post?

Thanks to everyone involved!
