"Antivirus 2009" virus

Actually this isn't a question for me but for my Dad. He has a Toshiba Satellite M115 laptop and his OS is Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. He called me today to tell me that he visited a website where he saw a button saying [in his words] "Internet Explorer has caught a virus. Click here to remove it" or something like that, so he clicked the button and saw a couple of legitimate-looking windows saying he should install a program called "Antivirus 9". When he declined and closed all the windows, they kept popping up. That's when he thought something was fishy.

When I came home I restarted his laptop but to no luck. I then ran a scan in AVG Anti-Virus Free and restarted the computer again - still no luck. I looked for "Antivirus 9" in Control Panel - yet still no luck. I don't know what to do now. Needless to say this is a virus. Virus windows keep popping up, IE contains the same "buttons" on every webpage now, all-in-all it's impossible to operate the thing. Please give me some advice!

Malwarebytes is briliant in removing AV2009 but just to make sure he could also install SuperAntiSpyware SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware. AntiSpyware. AntiMalware. Check settings to tell it not to start up with Windows - neither program conflicts with any AV.

If not in the mood for more programs even though they wont hurt run a special removal tool called Smitfraudfix SmitFraudFix Follow instructions precisely.

May be an idea to install Windows Defender if not done already.

AV2009 have probably blocked Malwarebytes domain through dns hijacking - might work with Firefox but here is another site to download MBAM from http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes_AntiMalware/1186760019/1

Thank you guys! I used stormy 13's directions and they worked! Will MBAM work if I keep it in programs and use it next time Dad's laptop is infected with malware?

Yeah, just do regular scans with it, maybe once a week and always have a major AV installed and actively monitoring.

Thank you. Dad's laptop has AVG Anti Virus Free. Is that enough with MBAM? Also, do any of you know how to copy a program from one computer to another? I want to copy Ares from my laptop to Dad's laptop. Ares was originally installed onto mine from a CD by a friend. Can I do that too?

Hi al,

It might be possible to transfer an installed program , but you would need not just the files you can see on your system , but also all the registry entries.

Why not d/l a fresh copy from here and install that
