I take it I'll find the Ambient Occlusion inside the games option settings? if so, I'll try but I got to be honest... I am baffled as to what the major difference that can do

If it is not there... where do I find it and how do I turn it on.

the changes are a little subtle in WAW but noticeable , its changes in the lighting , that make the whole scene more realistic , in single player i cant see any change as ive neber played it , in MP where i know the maps inside out i can see straight away the differances

I only do Single Player campaigns so I may not bother with it then since you stated that you did not see changes. Besides, I uninstalled it the other day to make room for Riddick... Oh well, next time.

well, current implementation of driver controlled AO effect is not very accurate and alittle bit computationally expensive. (actually it's done with a crude analytic algorithm.) In some cases, it helps to increase the depth complexity feelings for human eyes. However, i think many gamers may not even notice the difference in most scenes.

In a short, dont ever expect it could dramatically boost the visual realism.

Asta if you play the single player you will notice , the diferances in lighting are subtle in some cases thats why i dont notice them in the single player as i dont play it. If ive not seen the scene before i cant compare it to anything , without playing it over again with lighting on/off

in some cases on certain maps in multiplayer the differance in lighting is not as subtle and the overall look of the darkly lit areas of the game is greatly improved , im not saying you'll be blown away like i was , im an eye candy freak ;) but you might be impressed :)

there are loads of games it works in Crysis for example is supposed to have the greatest differance , also as the ighting in Riddick is so good it might be worth a shot trying it in that , save your game and turn it on and off see what you think

DEXTML , your right , in an FPS game such as COD waw you are hard pressed to notice , the game especially in multiplayer is far too fast , but in single player campains and other games it is very noticeable and so far ive had no major hit in FPS , so why not have it on?

this is very simple: some cards are not powerful enough. For those cards weaker than 8800GT, frame rate drop can be somewhat obvious or even horrible.
Usually, 256bit band-width should be a minimum requirement to enable the AO on majority of games.

cheers,
Dex

AO has a bigger impact in some games than others WAW has no noticible effect , i gave up measureing fps years ago (i got sick of constantly worrying about it) there will be a drop but i dont notice , Crysis however does suffer from a considerable hit , titles such as Left 4 dead dont

you have an 8800GT, so it's possible to enable it without too much worry.

Exactly. When I first played in Everquest 4 years ago, I had a 32 meg video card. (waits for laughter to die down).

Whenever I had to go through crowded zones, I had to use the overhead 3rd person view, not 1st person. Otherwise my frame rate dropped to a slide show rather than continuous motion. I 'see' okay now with my faster system and bigger video card. I still cannot turn on shadows and dynamic lighting in some zones.

In COD 5 Yes in Left 4 Dead yes , but in other games it has quite a noticeable effect on fps

lemme make this crystal clear:
Frame rate drops are not proportional across different games and cards.
Older cards have many unexpected bottlenecks while fancier NV80+ don't have.
Once the shading complexity walks over the limit, performance drops dramatically.

It's safe to say, for example, usually HDR is much more expensive on 8600GT than on 8800GT.

I don't know how it fairs on nvidia cards, but enabling SSAO in Riddick with my cards literally halves the framerate while games like STALKER CS it has little impact.

However that would have more to do with the game engines than the drivers.

this thread is about the new ambient occlusion setting in the NV driver panel , and it DOES effect fps in some games more than others regardless of the card your using , its widely reported that for example cod 5 has little noticable drop after enabling AC , crysis however can become unplayable on any card , yes the settings and res be be higher on the newer card but the overall effect on FPS is the same , it drops dramatically.

so.......let me make this crystal clear ;) Im not saying its proportional , im saying is major , in some games on ALL cards

I don't know how it fairs on nvidia cards, but enabling SSAO in Riddick with my cards literally halves the framerate while games like STALKER CS it has little impact.

Yes mate but SSAO works in a differant way to AO , SSAO works in real time and is VERY heavy on the GPU , the overall effect is better but the fps hit is ridiculous (reagrdless of yuor gpu ;) )

Since it's not an option in too many games and AO is not available with ATI drivers, I never took much notice of it and I always assumed that AO and SSAO were the same beast :o

Thanks archie :)

thay "kind of " are the same , SSAO is enabled by the game engine and in real time , looking fantastic too i might add , AO is driver level and the effect is more subtle but still nice

ive found some info on wikepedia

Screen Space Ambient Occlusion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ambient occlusion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

heres a few examples of NVidias AO you'll see its a bit more subtle

Thanks for the links mate. I'd certainly enable it if I had the option. Mirrors Edge might have looked less 'clinical' if it was an option. ;)

It's just another reason to go back to nvidia next time around.
