All desktop shortcuts launch with ieplorer

I'm pretty sure I'll have to do a install repair, but would like confirmation. It's not my computer but was called to repair the problem. It started when friend tried downloading a video file he sent to himself. (so no virus potential) he told the system to open with everything on his system to get it to play. It was a mpeg2 file so it would never play. When he gave up and tried launching a program. Every shortcut on the desktop launches with iexplorer. Properties for the shortcut point to the executable file for the intended program, so I don't get it. if I go to the program files folder and click on the executables, it launches correctly... only the shortcuts have been changed.

Is there another way of fixing this "inconvenience"?:huh:

Hi Vincent, and welcome to Vista Forums.

See if clicking on and download the .lnk fix in the box at this site can fix your problem after merging it. It restores the default .lnk (shortcut) associations in Vista.

I downloaded all the reg files and will have to wait until Tuesday to see if that does the trick, but thanks. You might have saved me some trouble.

Well, I tried the reg fixes with no postitive results. Although the process says it succeeded successfully, the shortcuts (quick-links) still try to launch with Internet Explorer.

Thanks for the help though... Going to try Repair Install. Hopefully it will go without any glitches.
