After Startup

Hey guys, Im new here, I found the site while googling for startup time tweaks. I have my startup time down to a reasonable one, but my problem is after It boots. When I get to my desktop, it takes 4-5 mins to be able to open any programs. All I have to startup is my AVG antivirus, and sound & graphics drivers. Will post any necessary info. Tried spyware scans and virus scans, no problems there.

I'm not positive on this, but it almost sounds like you may have gone and disabled something that you shouldn't have.

Either way, it will probably help to know what you've done to your system already!

It's likely AVG that doing an initial startup scan.

But also try running MSCONFIG and turning any useless startup programs, such as auto updaters (like those used by Adobe or Quicktime).

uhm I have everything disabled, except my realplayer autoupdate, because it keeps turning itself back on. Any way to avoid that scan with avg? or check if thats the problem? I can post a list of things disabled if necessary

Download an install HijackThis!, and then post it's log file, and we can get a better idea of what is running on your machine.

Is there any particular reason why you need to monitor HTTP traffic?

Do a thorough disk check of your boot drive to see if their is anything causing distruptions finding files:
  1. Open Windows Explorer (<WINDOWS_KEY>+<E>)
  2. Right-click your boot drive, then select "Properties"
  3. Click on "Tools"
  4. Under "Error-checking", click "Check Now" (you'll have to respond to a UAC prompt)
  5. Turn on both the "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attampt recovery of bad sectors" boxes
  6. Click "Start"
  7. Windows will want you to schedule a check because the drive is in use. Click "Schedule disk check"
  8. Restart the computer and allow the disk check to continue uninterupted
I also noticed a number of "File Missing" errors in the log. Try this:
  1. Open an administrator-level Command Prompt (Press <WINDOWS_KEY>, type "CMD" (without quotes) in the search box, press <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+<ENTER>)
  2. In the command window, type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes) and press <ENTER>

Agreed with the scanning of the hard drive, if there are bad sectors that will make the drive very hard to read in areas and create a very slow starting pc. There should be options within AVG that are checked to scan the pc when it boots up. You should be able to also double click the icon in the system tray to see if its scanning or not. Real Player should have the option to not start with Windows inside the program.

was monitoring the HTTP traffic, had massive loss packets a while back, and was trying to find the cause. never uninstalled the program afterwards. my realplayer has a scheduled update thing at startup, but I disabled it everywhere I could in realplayer, used msconfig to remove it, and also CCleaner.keeps coming back.Should the second option fix anything with the file missing errors? Will restart in a few minutes, and post again with the results of the scans of bad sectors, am working on my PC at the minute. thanks guys.
