Administrator Password

I have taken over the IT management at our company. The old IT man movede out of state. I have a computer that we trying tro add a program, when I try to install it it asks for an administrator password. I tried to run it regular mode and I tried to run as administrator. Both tries ask for an administrator password. How do I recover this password? I will have approximatlly 20 computers I am trying to run this on. I can't just reformat the hard drives because of the critical data.
The machines are running Windows XP Pro and Vista.
