adapter problems

I have dial up and sometimes the icon on task bar shows my computer is on but I can't access a site. It says check adapters. When I went into device manager, 4 of 6t04 and microsoft 6 to4 adapter #19 say that the latest adapter are installed. Then under properties it says This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers for this device Code 31. Is this normal and what can I do about it?

Most possible causes are modem problem or network problem
Update your nic card driver in device manager

Then try to correct the modem problem

Power cycle the modem (turn off the PC and modem) unplug the modem, if plugged in. Plug the modem in and wait a few minutes. Then plug in the router again wait a few minutes(if applies). Then reboot the PC.

Rich, I don't see a nic card driver in device manager. In Technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library it says Code 3;
the driver for this device might be corrupted or your system may be running low on memory or other resources.(just found this site)How do I fix or tell if this driver is corrupted, and how do I check for low memory? Thanks!

Any corrupted drives will have a yellow waring marker next to it in device manager
Right click on task bar. bar bottom of screen. Bring up task manager>performance>how much available memory.

You still didn't say how to fix the corrupt adapters. Someone said to go to device manager,expand Networking and uninstall all devices. Start type devmgmt.misc Windows will reinstallthe drivers upon bootup. Is this info correct? Also I don't know how to expand networking as per his instructions.

I thought that it was just necessary to update the nic driver or install one that is not corrupt and make sure memory was up to par.

Right now I can't install update definitions for Norton and waiting for tech support.What are the steps if I want to switch to another virus protection? I don't know how to send a screen shot(newbie).

If you want to switch, you uninstall your old AV. Many have an uninstall tool. If you give me the name I can help you find it. Then you go to the website of the new AV and download. I hope the new one is Microsoft Security Essentials, one of the best for Vista.

Go to search, type snipping tool. Then with snipping tool copy what you want and send pic to documents. Then just download to us.

I have Norton antivirus. Do you have the uninstall site? Am checking out microsoft security essentials.

I read where norton uninstall may leave files on your registry and that their uninstall doesn't work all the time. Have you heard this?

The only thing that I know is that an anti virus is insidious. Normal uninstalls do not work properly. Use the uninstall tool after you make a system restore point. If not satisfied, just go back.

I uninstalled Norton and installed microsoft security essentials.Now I noticed Windows Defender is tuned off. What do I do about this?

Actually, just sit back and smile. Defender functions are taken over by Security Essentials. Defender is suppose to be turned off. You have two in one. An antivirus and malware protection.
