Activate Vista....AGAIN??!!! - SP1

I just applied SP1 to Vista Business 32 bit. It's now requiring me to Activate Windows and says that the activation key that it grabbed from my machine was already in use. DUH!!!!!! No kidding....I only have 1 Vista Business computer and only one key. What gives???

Found this on the KB articles:
Cause 1: Changes to hardware or to hardware device drivers are detected

Part of the Windows Genuine process requires that you reactivate your computer when certain hardware is changed or when certain hardware device drivers are changed. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 may update some installed device drivers. Therefore, you may be prompted to activate Windows Vista again.

Ok...I can understand that....but it still will NOT allow me to activate my computer!!!!

Hi sawdustar, and welcome to the forums!

I saw your same situation in a Newsgroup post, and this was the solution given:

You are prompted to activate Windows Vista after you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1
You are prompted to activate Windows Vista after you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1

You can reset your Windows Vista activation by performing the following:

1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in: slui.exe 4

2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

3. Select your Country.

4. Follow the instructions for phone activation.

5. Once completed, restart your computer.

Hope that works for you!

Dustin

Any time! i had just happened to see the other post before yours came in...

Let us know how it goes! It will probably suck having to actually call MS, but if it works, it works.

Sweet!

I still haven't been able to get SP1 on my desktop at home because apparently when i did the Ultimate install i allowed all of the available language packs to be installed. Well the first release of SP1 is only for the 5 primary languages (forgot what the other 4 are) and so the other language packs prevent WU from showing you SP1. It takes about 25 minutes, start to finish, to uninstall just 1 language pack and they have to be done one at a time....i think when i left this morning i still had about 13 to go!!! FUN!

BTW Dustin....how do you like "Ultimate"?? I've thought about upgrading as I have Business Edition and I do a lot of music and pictures, which is a weak link in Business edition.

i really like it. I have Home Premium on my wife's laptop and put Ultimate on the desktop replacing XP Pro a couple of months ago because i got a huge discount on an upgrade disk ($92 through the university student program where she's in grad school as opposed $200 + retail!). You get the best of all versions in one, for you i believe your biggest add-on would be the media center, which for pictures, movies, TV...definitely worth it.

I have had to call ms a couple of times in the past, I do not know why people are reluctant to do it as they are (belive it or not) quite helpful.

roy69, honestly i'm not assuming that MS phone support will be less than fun because its MS, but rather because its still phone support in general.. I have no specific beef with their phone support and have actually never had to use it. Their online support has been good to me however.
