"access: local only" help! :(

Hi guys!

As youve seen from the title, its the access: local only error!

I just built a rig this weekend, hours slaving over the damn beast!

I cant connect to the internent, it says "access: local only", after doing a bit of googling i can see it must be a bit of a problem for vista?

I can connect to the internet sometimes for small amonuts of time before im shut off!

Im using a wierd connection straight into the router, have all drivers installed ect, other comps on the network can connect, just not mine

I get a I am also getting "Cannot communicate with DNS server (ip)!! (Think its somthing todo with that!)

I tired this Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers, but didnt seem to resolve the issue! I also tried disabling ipv6 and setting the DNS in ipv4 settings!

Im am at my wits end! Please help!

Hi,

As an initial test try setting your primary and alternate DNS to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. respectively, these are free to use external servers which may solve the problem you have of not reaching your servers

The machine appears to be successfully obtaining a DHCP lease from the router, at least according to the IPCONFIG output. Is that always the case - is IPCONFIG /RENEW always successful, or only during those short intervals when you seem to have network connectivity?

Can you connect to things if you use their IP instead of their name? You can use one of the other boxes to resolve IPs for you if necessary, just ping the name.

What does ARP -AV say during the times when you can't connect? The fact that it periodically works might suggest some sort of negative ARP caching issue.

Do you have the exact same issue if you boot to safe mode + net?

Have you tried connecting to one of the ports on the router normally used by a "working" machine?

Is there any likelihood of a MAC-filtering block on the router? In other words, is the router configured to only allow a certain list of clients, based on their MAC addresses?

You seem to have two onboard NIC ports. Does the same issue happen for both?

BTW, there's really no need to obfuscate IPs in the 192.168.*.* range. THere's another 5 million PCs in the world with the exact same IP, and it confers absolutely no information whatsoever about your identity or whereabouts

Ill have to check the ipconfig /all when i have conn and when i dnt to see if there is a difference! Like i said i have seen the "Cannot communicate with DNS server (ip)!" pop up a couple of times!

H2SO4 - I havnt tried or used IPCONFIG /RENEW before, im taking it it resets all your settings?

Never heard of ARP -AV before, can u explain it please?

I havnt tried to boot in safe mode with networking.

I would have thought if my mac address was blocked i wouldnt be able to get any connectivity at all? The fact im getting some sometimes makes me think its not that.

Yes it happens on both NIC ports!

IPCONFIG /RENEW initiates a DHCP lease renewal. The point is to check whether your machine can always readily communicate with the DHCP server that's built into the router, even while other types of connectivity fail.

ARP - Address Resolution Protocol. All direct (not through router) communication actually happens via MAC (hardware) addresses, and the ARP protocol is used to discover MAC addresses given a certain IP. The OS keeps a table of recent mappings, and that's what the "ARP -VA" command will display for you.

The idea behind trying to access websites by IP is so the whole name resolution mechanism can be taken out of the picture. If your problem machine fails to access a web server by its IP address, although the same test works on all your other machines, you can be reasonably confident it's got nothing to do with DNS and name resolution.

I had the same problem just download xp drivers and your computer will work fine. vista drivers suck. they arent compatible with nearly everything and had to have a computer guy come down and couldn't figure out what was wrong until he had an idea and downloaded the xp drivers and everything was fine.

ok so I think i figured it out, I used to do tech support for 2wire and constantly was facing these problems. And right now i'm on vacation and my computer keeps switching to local only. I just went through to look at my settings and i noticed Vista said it limited my access when i had gthe network saved as "Public" on my computer. I changed it to save the network as being "Private" and have currently gone 5 hours without local only compared to 3 mins being my record before the switch. anyone having this problem please try this out and let me know if it works.



for easy instructions just open network and sharing center, click the "customize" next to your network. and there it should let you change the name as well as pick public or private.
