Access denied

Hi!
I've been having this annoying problem with Vista. I've only been using Vista for about 1.5 months.

Whenever I try to access folders under my name (set up as administrator), most of the time I get access denied. It is driving me nuts. I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders.

This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder.

What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

Thanks.

Do these files that you try and click into have a blue arrow in a white box on the lower left hand corner of the icon?

If so, then you can't access these files. They are Microsoft locked files.

Also, if you go to your start button, and right click, choose explore, does that bring up your start menu window?

Hi simssk,

Vista uses a different file structure from XP . It has junction points that look like folders. They send older apps. that use the old style file structure to the correct Vista folder.

Vista doesn't want people messing with them and will deny access.

For example, your documents are actually in C:\users\username\Documents.

There is a free app. from NirSofer called specialfoldersview you may find useful

Hope it helps

Thanks SIW2! I finally found where to change the start menu. I'm not used to the new file system in Vista yet but slowly getting there, thanks to forums like this.

Hi Ben,

Once you have unzipped the app. just rt click and run as admin on the .exe

a window opens showing the special and normally hidden folders - double click on one and it takes you straight to it

Hope it helps

It's useful if you want to get to some of those folders without typing the full path, or if you don't know what the path is, and/or if you haven't checked show hidden files and folders.

Digging thru them to see what's inside can be interesting.
