Access denied?

When I try to access the My Documents or My Music folders in my user account folder, it says Access Denied. Also, when I tried to disable indexing for my hard drive, I was denied access as well. Do I need to be on the root admin account to have access to these things? How do I get rid of all these annoying restrictions so I can use them on my regular account? I have UAC disabled.

Some folders are hidden and old "WinXP folders" like "My Documents" are simply there to help direct older programs when installing.

General rule... if you're in Windows Explorer and you see a folder with a "shortcut arrow" on it... it's probably one of those mystery system "non-folders".

Here's a list of the "non-folders" you'll get this message on:

Application Data
cookies
local settings
NetHood
PrintHood
Recent
SendTo
Start Menu
Templates
My Documents (is now called Documents)
--Sub non-folders of "Documents"
----My Music
----My Pictures
----My Videos

All of those above are supposed to be hidden (you probably, as I did, enabled yourself to view all hidden files and folders and are now going WTF on these hidden folders)...

I found a topic on Microsoft.com about this... but I assume you didn't find it as you're now asking for help. ;)

TK.

Under default conditions, you should not even be able to see the folders such as "Documents and settings" It comes under "protected Operating system" in the Tools/view, which is switched out by default.

I'm the admin. This is my own computer and I simply don't want Vista to restrict my access to folders.

I'll check this out though. Thank you.

I hope you understand what I posted above... the folders you're trying to access aren't really there... they're simply fake folders or fake shortcuts that are simply there to allow backwards compatibility for older software. You'll never gain access to them no matter how you're logged in because they're not real folders.

The real location of your pictures will read something like;
C:/Users/(you user name)/Pictures

I also have enabled viewing of hidden and system files. This is to help me with my A+ course in the understanding of what under the bonnet.

Hi, degwar here, new member.
I came across this thread after ripping my hair out trying to gain access to my third hdd, a seagate 320Gb sata.
I could not get access at all.
I had loaded it under W2K, and forgot I write protected it.
:o
No amount of share enabling could get access to it

After a long period of frustration I realized a simple fact.

My access rights were incorrect.

Here is how to fix it...

Open my computer.
Open any folder.

Click tools, folder options.

At the bottom is a check box called "enable simple file sharing"
.

UNCHECK THIS BOX!

Click apply to all folders, apply, ok.

Now right click the hdd, click properties, ownership.
Click add your username, apply to subfolders, apply, ok.

Windows should open a dialog box saying taking ownership of, and be busy for a while.

Note this is using XP x64, but I assume that Vista X64 is the same.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!

:D
