access denied when sharing folders

greatings everyone, This is my first post here, I have been searching hi and low to find a few vista answers.

my situation: I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.)

I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. ( makes it easier for me to dump off my recently taken pics from vacations that i may have dumped onto my laptop, and now that i am back home would like to dump back to the vista machine.) This machine is also part of a domain (a whole other nightmare to get vista to join my domain) My server is running windows 2003 standard.

I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders.

from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories.

what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache.

*the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi MoNkLorD I also had a similar problem and managed to access some of the network folder putting them in the trusted site list in IE, go into tools then internet options and then security, go to trusted sites then click on the sites button, uncheck the box at the bottom and type \ and the directory your trying to access without any space.
And thats it hope that helps you a bit.

OK so this must be added to the trusted sites on the vista machine, i will give this a shot and see if i can access my folders from the server.

You say you have set folder permissions - have you done this for both share permissions and NTFS file permissions?

yes i have set folder permission but i have a feeling it is not taking properly. i am not sure as to what you mean by NTFS file permission. in the security tap ?
I also cant change location under the permission tab as well.

i have set permissions under the security tab when right clicked on the hdd or folder and under the sharing permission tab. i even tried mapping the drive to the server and setting the security tab. i will try and get some screen shots up

i set security setting permission to everyone which now allows me to access my shares, but why cant i set for idividual users on the domain it will not allow me to change location

Hi MoNkLorD,

Browsing other Vista forums seems to indicate that a lot of folk are having similar problems, and there seem to be a number of different causes/solutions/workarounds. Have a look at:

Destination Folder Access Denied

Alan Cobb's post on Page 1 there explains better than I can, the two different permissions that have to be set correctly, but you seem to have that sorted out anyway.

Don't think I can help further, got no experience of domains for one thing. I've been on Vista for two months, initially connecting into my XP & NT4 network was a nightmare, one issue being getting the permissions right, the other something totally unconnected with any problems other people sem to be having (it was about the way Vista handles account name changes, somewhat idiosyncratic!).

W3000x2VHP thanks for the link and insight. i will definitely look there to see what they have figured out.
I do have sharing sort of working right now. It is wide open but i want to fix that and have different levels for each user. just want to be able to set a few folders as read only to prevent accidental name changes and or deletes.
